The importance of optimizing the microbiome simply can’t be overestimated. As gastrointestinal microbiologists continue to explore the uncharted territory of the body’s beneficial bacteria, it’s becoming clear that we simply can’t live without these symbiotic microbes. Now researchers have begun to hone in on how supporting these bacteria with probiotics can help prevent many of our society’s most prevalent chronic diseases.

Scientists have known for some time that the beneficial bacteria in your gut aid digestion and nutrient absorption, regulate appetite and metabolism, and boost immune function. To put it bluntly, this means that gut dysbiosis (i.e. an imbalance between beneficial and harmful bacteria in the gut) can make us fat and sick.

Our understanding of the microbiome is still in its infancy. It was hard to recognize microbiome imbalance when we lacked a basic understanding of its function and baseline state. Rigorous study has provided scientists with a much better picture, though—and this improved comprehension has allowed for widespread agreement about the characteristics of healthy and unhealthy gut flora colonies.

Once they knew what to look for, researchers started asking an important question: could gut dysbiosis be linked with chronic disease?

The incidence of many serious and prevalent chronic diseases has risen dramatically in the past few decades, and the cause of this escalating health crisis is widely debated.

Researchers hope that a deeper understanding of the microbiome will help us prevent (and even reverse) a wide variety of chronic diseases, including autoimmune conditions, mental health disorders, heart disease, metabolic disorders, and cancer.

Can probiotics help solve our health crisis?

Probiotic supplementation has increased in popularity, and for good reason. Here are some of the chronic illnesses that probiotics can help us avoid and overcome, according to researchers.

Gastrointestinal conditions. As the gut is the epicenter of the microbiome, it stands to reason that probiotics offer powerful support for a wide range of stomach issues. One comprehensive medical review reports that “perturbation of bacteria microflora of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract” can contribute to the development of GI ailments and disorders like diarrhea (especially when antibiotic-induced diarrhea), colitis, Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), pouchitis, and small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO).

The researchers report that probiotic supplementation is a safe, effective, and time-tested treatment for these conditions.[1]

Auto-immune conditions. The gut microbiome accounts for a large percentage of the body’s immune defense capacity—up to 80%, by some estimates. Thus, gut dysbiosis is a clear precondition of immune dysfunction. Studies have detailed how gut dysbiosis underlies allergies, immunosuppression associated with viral infection, negative vaccination reaction,[2] type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and systemic lupus,[3] and have demonstrated that probiotics can be an effective preventative against and treatment for these conditions. As an added bonus, probiotic supplementation can even help protect the skin against the effects of aging and light damage.[4]

Skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis can all be traced back to issues with inflammatory response and immune function. Therefore, by restoring bacterial balance, reducing gastrointestinal inflammation, and modulating immune response, probiotics can play a critical role in the treatment of skin conditions.

Mental health disorders. Research has revealed a profound connection between the gut microbiome and the brain—an association now referred to as the “gut-brain axis.” Consequently, gut dysbiosis has been strongly linked with depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, autism, and other mental health disorders, according to medical reviews.[5] Probiotic use has therefore been linked to improved symptoms of depression and other mental health issues.[6]

Heart disease is the number one killer in the United States—so you can imagine the excitement with which researchers reported that healthy microflora ratios achieved via regular probiotic supplementation can help prevent heart damage, heart failure, and other age-related cardiovascular issues.[7]

Metabolic disorders. Obesity and type 2 diabetes afflict an enormous percentage of the American population. While poor diet and sedentary lifestyle are certainly the biggest causative factors, researchers have been pleased to find that probiotics can help modulate metabolism, aid weight loss, ameliorate diabetic symptoms, and improve insulin sensitivity.[8]

Cancer. A growing body of medical literature suggests that gut dysbiosis (and the state of chronic inflammation associated with it) is strongly linked with the development of cancer. Studies have demonstrated that probiotics are beneficial in the prevention and treatment of cancer, not only due to their capacity to heal gut dysbiosis and systemic inflammation, but also due to direct anti-metastatic properties (i.e. the property of preventing cancer colony metastasis).[9]

The right way to use probiotics

The evidence above shows just how powerful probiotics can be—but you shouldn’t rely on them as a replacement for a balanced, healthy, nutrient-dense diet. No probiotic supplementation can overcome the damage caused by a diet of processed foods and indiscriminate use of antibiotics, unless you shift your habits in a healthier direction.

As long as you keep this principle in mind, however, probiotics can be an effective tool for rebuilding and protecting your microbiome.

Stick with probiotic products that implement well-tested bacterial strains, such as Lactobacillus rhamnosus (L. rhamnosus). Only use products that use a formulation method that verifiably optimizes absorption—the vast majority of probiotics simply die in the acidic conditions of the stomach before they can even be utilized by the body.

Adaptogens are some of nature’s best kept secrets—despite growing popularity in niche communities, these powerful “adaptation-generating” plants are still highly underutilized.

Adaptogenic plants and herbs have been used medicinally for thousands of years, especially in Ayurvedic medicine and folk herbalism. They were traditionally given as tonics for longevity, vitality, and fortitude—now modern research is rediscovering them as perfect tools for supporting both overall wellness as well as acute health issues.

We gave a primer on adaptogens in a past article, and explained how they function as an ideal antidote to the constant stress of the modern world. They help the body learn stress resistance, the process of coping with environmental stressors in a sustainable and optimized way. This translates into a strengthened immune system, balanced hormones, enhanced performance, and increased disease resistance.

In other articles, we’ve provided more in-depth overviews of several of the top adaptogens, like ashwagandha, turmeric, cordyceps mushroom, maca, and tulsi (which is also known as Holy Basil). Another fascinating adaptogen that deserves the spotlight is rhodiola rosea (it’s usually referred to simply as rhodiola).

Rhodiola: A natural performance enhancer, antidepressant, and so much more

Rhodiola, a perennial herb also referred to as golden root, arctic root, and rose root, is an adaptogen par excellence. Like other prominent plants in its class, it continues to impress researchers with the versatility of its benefits and therapeutic applications.

Here’s a taste of what we’ve discovered about this powerhouse herb so far…

Perfect immune modulation. Rhodiola is incredibly effective for immunomodulation—this means that it works to balance immune function, whether it’s underactive or overactive. Research suggests that this property makes rhodiola a promising treatment for a variety of health conditions, including autoimmune disorders, cancer, and more.[1]

Improved sexual and reproductive health. Folk usage and modern rhodiola research both suggest that rhodiola can balance hormone levels (once again, boosting or lowering depending on what is needed) and can help with infertility, libido, erectile dysfunction, and more. Unlike many herbs and remedies for addressing sexual health concerns, it has been shown to be equally safe and beneficial for both men and women.[2]

Relief from anxiety and depression. Rhodiola really began to garner attention in research circles when studies uncovered its profound antidepressant and anti-anxiety properties. Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials have demonstrated that 340-1,360mg daily afforded “significant improvements” in symptoms of depression[3] and anxiety,[4] that its efficacy could be favorably compared to that of pharmaceuticals, and that the benefits offered come without any side effects.

Endocrine support. Endocrine imbalance caused by continual environmental stress can lead to all sorts of serious health problems, including chronic fatigue syndrome and “burnout.” Researchers have demonstrated that, after taking 400mg of rhodiola per day for 12 weeks, 83% of study participants reported a dramatic improvement in the symptoms and impairments of chronic fatigue or burnout syndrome.[5]

Enhanced athletic performance. Rhodiola has been used for centuries as a tried and true vitality elixir. Studies have confirmed that it improves numerous markers for athletic performance, including inflammatory biomarkers, time to exhaustion during exercise, C-reactive protein levels, heart rate, endurance, blood lactate levels, recovery time, and markers of neuromotor fitness.[6] And whether or not you’re a die-hard athlete, rhodiola has also been shown to prevent stress-induced cardiac damage and to improve overall markers of cardiovascular health.[7]

Antiviral effects. In case you still need more incentive to try out this incredible herb, rhodiola also exhibits potent antiviral properties. It’s particularly good at building innate immunity and protecting against infection with influenza, respiratory infections, and other common viral ailments. One study even demonstrated that it prevented infection and stopped viral replication in marathon runners, who are especially susceptible to viral infection about prolonged exertion.[8]

How to get started

While rhodiola may still be underutilized, it has become popular enough that it’s fairly easy to source. Well-stocked grocery stores, health food stores, and herb supply shops will all very likely have some on hand, and there are plenty of reputable online sources, as well.

Working with 10:1 concentrations of rhodiola can amplify and accelerate its effects, but loose herb capsules (which is what you’ll find in most stores) are powerful and effective enough for most applications.

Note that some people find rhodiola to be quite stimulating (though it’s not a stimulant in the traditional sense), so don’t take it in the evening unless you’re sure it doesn’t have this effect on you.

When working with rhodiola or any other adaptogen, it’s often helpful to “cycle” your doses—namely, take it every day for a certain length of time, and then take a break for that same length of time (most people choose one or two weeks). This process helps keep rhodiola acutely effective in the long-term, and gives your body time to integrate in between cycles.

Mushrooms are a fascinating and highly healthful class of foods. We even suggested in a past article that they’re the world’s most underestimated superfoods.

If you follow natural health trends, you’ve probably noticed that enthusiasm for “medicinal mushrooms” is growing quickly. Mushroom-based supplements now line the aisles of health food stores, mushroom coffee blends are gaining traction as a healthy morning pick-me-up, and researchers are continually discovering new surprising health benefits of fungi.

If mushrooms still aren’t on your radar as an essential superfood, they should be. In past articles, we’ve covered some of the most popular medicinal mushrooms, such as reishi, shitake, maitake, turkey tail, chaga, and cordyceps.

These powerful fungi boost immune function, increase disease resistance, fight illnesses and health problems, and send energy levels through the roof, all without the nasty side effects and risks so common in allopathic medicine.

Still, these superstar fungi only represent a miniscule portion of the healing mushrooms that nature has to offer. There are 10,000 documented species of “fleshy fungi” (the official, somewhat strange name for mushrooms) in North America alone—and nearly all mycologists agree that there are undiscovered species. Even when this cornucopia is weeded down to the edible and medicinal types, there are still enough mushroom species to keep you busy for a lifetime!

One type of mushroom we haven’t yet discussed is enoki (also called enokitake in Japan, Korea, and China, where they’re a common delicacy). Enoki mushrooms look rather like white stringy pasta with tiny caps (an appearance which may make them a bit easier to eat for those who generally find mushrooms creepy-looking). They have a delicate, mild taste (almost fruity), and take on a delicious, crisp texture when cooked.

Despite their delicate nature, though, enoki mushrooms pack a powerful punch when it comes to supporting your health.

The many health benefits of enokis

In case deliciousness isn’t quite enough of an incentive for you to include enoki mushrooms in your diet, don’t worry: there’s lots more to love about them. Enokis have been prized for centuries as a health tonic in Eastern medicinal doctrines, and Western doctors are even beginning to use them as a functional food for treating acute health problems, including immune dysfunction, metabolic disorders, liver disease, cholesterol imbalance, digestive disorders, and cancer.[1]

Let’s take a look at how these delicate little fungi can help you optimize your health and vitality.

Nutrient and antioxidant density. Superfoods and functional foods are touted for their acute disease-fighting abilities. They often contain compounds with very specific healing properties (we’ll talk about some of the ones in enoki mushrooms in just a bit). However, it’s easy to fall into a “magic bullet” way of thinking when focusing on specific super-healing compounds—try to remember that overall nutrient and antioxidant density is the key to sustainable healing and health maintenance.

Enoki mushrooms certainly more than measure up when it comes to nutrient density. They’re brimming with a variety of B vitamins, minerals like copper, calcium, iron, potassium, and selenium, a small amount of highly absorbable protein, and essential amino acids like lysine, ergothioneine, and valine (all of which maintain the integrity of metabolic function and optimize immune response).

Beta-glucan content. Beta-glucans are a prime example of those acutely healing compounds we mentioned above. A rising tide of research demonstrates that beta-glucans are an immensely powerful tool for balancing immune and metabolic functions.

For example, some of the beta-glucan types found in enoki mushrooms (i.e. beta-linked glucose, galactose, mannose, and fucose) trigger a dramatically increased expression of nitric oxide by immune cells. In another article, we covered how nitric oxide can help prevent heart disease and ease aging. Researchers also believe it’s one of the body’s central mechanisms for destroying diseased cells.[2]

Other research has shown that beta-glucans act as potent immunomodulators—this means they’re equally adept at balancing immune deficiency or overactivity as is necessary. They activate the body’s pathogen-destroying macrophages, stimulate white blood cell production, and even improve insulin resistance and blood cholesterol levels.[3]

Cancer-fighting compounds. Researchers are very excited about the potential medicinal mushrooms hold as a natural, side-effect-free cancer treatment—and enoki mushrooms are at the forefront of this movement. The enthusiasm was originally kicked off in 1969 by a study published in Cancer Research. The research discovered that two previously undiscovered compounds in mushrooms—flammulin and proflamin—exhibited powerful and targeted anti-tumor activity. The study also noted that inhabitants of the Nagano region of Japan (which also happens to be the heart of the country’s enoki mushroom cultivation) had extremely low rates of cancer.[4]

Corroborating research has identified enoki mushrooms (as well as some of the mushroom species in our previous articles) as essential anti-cancer foods, both for prevention and treatment.

Get started with enokis

Enoki mushrooms are less common in the United States than in Asia, but you can still often find them in well-stocked health food stores. Check at local Asian markets, as well. If worst comes to worst, you can also directly source both fresh and dried enokis from online sources.

Once you’ve found yourself a source, the sky’s the limit for culinary options: throw them into salads raw, include them in stir-fries, omelets, soups, and pasta dishes, or roll them into sushi rolls. They’ll remind you how delicious taking care of your health can be!

After reading one of our many articles about the healing marvels of turmeric, you may have headed to your local health food store or coop to pick up some raw root. If so, you probably noticed that it’s very often displayed alongside ginger.

These botanically related roots are similar in many ways—they share the same strange gnarled appearance, and they both boast vibrant colors. Most importantly, though, they’re both veritable panaceas. Turmeric has really stolen the show in this arena, but researchers and natural health experts alike are finally recognizing that the medicinal potential of ginger is just as profound.

Like turmeric, ginger has been used medicinally for thousands of years. Nevertheless, mainstream medicine is only just beginning to “prove” its effectiveness for aiding and treating a huge variety of ailments and conditions, as well as its efficacy as a general longevity tonic.

Ginger is one talented little root

Ginger is one spice that we recommend keeping on hand in your kitchen at all times. Not only is it a wonderful addition to your cooking (especially paired with garlic) but it also has enough medicinal properties to fill several books.

If you find yourself nauseous or with an upset stomach, mince up a small amount (about the size of your fingernail) and swallow it. You’ll be amazed at the relief it provides. Yet this is only the beginning…

The most commonly used medicinal part of the plant is the rhizome, the root-like stem that grows underground. It’s a rich source of antioxidants including gingerols, shogaols, zingerones, and more.

Here’s a small sampling of ginger’s healing and life-enhancing applications, as revealed by both modern research and ancient practice.

It’s a “universal” microbial agent. Ginger is wildly effective at combatting all four major categories of microbial pathogens: bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic. It’s more effective than pharmaceutical antibiotics at treating staph infections and antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and it can even wipe out parasitic worms with 90% effectiveness in less than a day.[1]

These are feats which no prescription drug can boast—and ginger accomplishes them all without harming your body’s cells, beneficial bacteria, or immune system (all of which are significantly compromised by conventional antimicrobial protocols).

It’s more effective than chemotherapy at treating cancer. As we discussed in more detail in a previous article, ginger is also an incredibly potent cancer treatment. Studies have revealed that it’s able to target both cancer cells and cancer stem cells (CSC’s), without harming healthy cells. And the efficacy with which it targets CSC’s has been demonstrated to be up to 10,000 times that of chemotherapy.[2]

It’s a powerful weight loss aid. Despite marketers’ attempts to brand any herb possible as a cutting-edge weight loss supplement, ginger somehow still managed to slip through the cracks. The irony is that ginger is a legitimate metabolism booster and appetite suppressant, and thus it’s a powerful and healthy ally for anyone struggling with weight management.

It’s a superior detox enhancer. Unlike conventional antibiotics, cancer treatments, and weight loss aids, ginger supports the body rather than taxing it. It does so by boosting immune function and supercharging your body’s natural detoxification mechanisms.

It’s even a natural source of melatonin, one of the most potent endogenous antioxidants and detox agents of all (it even has the added benefit of providing deeper, better sleep). Ginger is even able to detox radioactive materials from your body.

It’s a perfect natural anti-inflammatory. As we’ve written about in the past, inflammation is the root of nearly every disease. NSAID’s, steroids, and other conventional anti-inflammatories suppress the immune system and cause all sorts of nasty side effects, including severe gastrointestinal issues.

But ginger has been shown to be effective at relieving the aches and pains of acute inflammation and controlling the chronic inflammation that leads to degenerative diseases and conditions.[3]

And that’s just the beginning. The deeper researchers dig into ginger’s medical applications, the more they become convinced that there’s nothing it can’t treat. Studies demonstrate its ability to treat (and prevent) ulcers, diabetes (and its complications), gastrointestinal conditions, liver disease, menstrual pain, gout, nausea, heart disease, and more.[4]

If this powerful root isn’t already a part of your ongoing dietary or supplement regimen, you’d be wise to include it.

How to use ginger

Many of the studies being conducted on ginger employ isolated extracts of specific beneficial compounds. While the results of such applications have been impressive in their own right, the benefits of ginger are dramatically amplified when you consume either the raw root or a full-spectrum extract.

An increasing amount of evidence suggests that the full spectrum of a medicinal plant’s compounds nearly always works better than an isolated compound—in short, it suggests that Nature got it right the first time.

Nevertheless, it seems like conventional medicine will need to tinker with their “precise” and “scientific” chemical isolates for a while longer before they accept that the original, natural version of a plant’s composition is optimal just the way it is.

To that effect, try to include lots of raw ginger root in your diet if you want to take advantage of its many benefits. I even enjoy juicing ginger root or throwing a 1-2 inch piece of peeled root into my morning smoothie. If you want to try using ginger as a supplement, be sure to find a full-spectrum extract.

Ingredients:

Place the ginger in a teapot. Add the boiling water and allow it to steep for 5-10 minutes.

Regardless of which route of you choose, this under appreciated super-healing root is bound to facilitate big changes for your overall health and vitality.

Antibiotic resistance is one of most serious health crises of our time. The World Health Organization reports that “a post-antibiotic era—in which common infections and minor injuries can kill—far from being an apocalyptic fantasy, is instead a very real possibility for the 21st century.”[1]

Even mainstream health agencies like the Center for Disease Control and leading researchers are using words like “nightmare” and “apocalypse” to describe the impending uselessness of conventional antibiotics. Meanwhile, business presses on as usual, with astoundingly little being done to prevent or slow the onset of complete antibiotic resistance.

We’ve written before about some of the biggest culprits.

Overprescription of antibiotics by doctors is an obvious problem (though, on the bright side, Blue Cross Blue Shield reports that the prescription rate has dropped 9% in the United States this year).[2]

Antibacterial soaps are a less conspicuous (and possibly even more worrisome) source of antibiotic resistance. We’re exposed to them nearly every day—unless we take precautions to avoid them. Even conventional dairy products and meat are often contaminated with antibiotics (and all sorts of other toxins too).

But did you know that dentistry is also to blame for the rise of antibiotic-resistant superbugs?

Careless dentistry has spawned a potentially deadly infection

We tend to think that antibiotics are only used and prescribed by hospital physicians and medical doctors, but dentists make a significant contribution to the total too—it’s estimated that they write over 24.5 million prescriptions every year. And unlike the prescription rate among medical doctors, the use of antibiotics in dentistry is increasing.[3]

Now a number of health agencies are investigating the connection between dental antibiotic usage and a new, potentially deadly infection called Clostridium difficile. Over the last six years, the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) has discovered that at least 15% of those infected with C. diff were prescribed antibiotics by dentists (57% had received an antibiotic prescription from either a dentist or a doctor).[4]

The investigation has revealed some worrying facts about antibiotic usage by dentists. For starters, a full one third of C. diff patients who were given antibiotics by dentists had medical records that did not mention the prescriptions. This is not only careless recordkeeping, but is also in clear violation of American Dental Association (ADA) guidelines.

The MDH noticed that even when antibiotic prescriptions were notated on medical records, there were often other ADA violations taking place—in fact, 36% of all prescriptions were non-compliant. Some had been given to patients with contraindicated conditions, and others had been given when there was really no need.

This is a key point. If it seems like dentists are being scolded unfairly (after all, doctors still prescribe vastly more antibiotics than dentists), remember that dental procedures very rarely require antibiotics. A tooth abscess often requires antibiotic treatment, but the practice is otherwise gratuitous. The takeaway, then, is that dentistry is one field in need of drastic improvement when it comes to preventing antibiotic resistance.

While there are certainly many factors contributing to antibiotic resistance, experts believe that this unscrupulous use of antibiotics by dentists is at least partially to blame for the spread of the C. diff infection, which affected a half million people just in a single year, and is now the most common microbial cause of healthcare-associated infections in U.S. hospitals.[5]

What you can do

Here’s the good news about antibiotic resistance: there are still many natural remedies that serve as effective antibiotics, and they work far more harmoniously with your body anyway.

Even the CDC and other mainstream health organizations warn that conventional antibiotics severely imbalance gut flora, increase the risk of gastrointestinal issues, hamper the immune system, and increase the risk of infection with antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

According to surveys conducted by the Center for Disease Control, only about 27 percent of Americans get more than three servings of vegetables per day.

Most of us know by now that we need to be eating fresh fruits and veggies everyday in abundance for optimal health and detoxification. However, for many people this isn’t as easy as it might seem. While it isn’t meant to replace eating fresh vegetables, wheatgrass benefits provide numerous antioxidants and other nutrients, all in one small easy-to-drink glass.

If you’ve ever taken a shot of wheatgrass juice, you know that it’s an intense experience…even for those inclined toward superfoods and natural remedies. But rest assured, a mountain of evidence shows that it’s completely worth it.

And that’s just a start.

Wheatgrass has plenty of benefits that are backed by science—no exaggeration necessary. So without further ado, let’s take a look at what this time-honored superfood has to offer.

Nutrient density is one of the most important qualifications of an optimal diet. Across the board, processed and packaged foods, sweets, and snacks are all woefully lacking in the nutrients your body needs. Whole foods, on the other hand, are packed with them—and superfoods are those which tend to have even higher levels of nutrients per serving.

While some of the nutrient claims of wheatgrass are overstated, it’s still packed with more than enough to qualify as an outstanding superfood. It contains chlorophyll (more on that in a minute), vitamin A, vitamin E, 19 different amino acids, beneficial enzymes, and nearly every earth element found in healthy soil (98 out of 102). To top things off, it contains all of these nutrients in ratios that are perfect for maximum absorption by the body.

Immune support. Anything as nutrient-dense as wheatgrass is bound to stimulate immune function, just by virtue of providing the body with what it needs to function optimally. But researchers also found another, more interesting way in which wheatgrass can boost immunity.

Wheatgrass is comprised of 70% chlorophyll, which many health experts believe can increase the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood.  A study in the Journal of Indian Pediatrics found that drinking 3.5 oz of wheatgrass juice everyday decreased the number of blood transfusions required by patients with thalassemia (a condition characterized by low levels of hemoglobin).[2]

What this means is that drinking wheatgrass juice improves red blood cell count, thus increasing the blood’s oxygen-carry capacity and boosting immune function.

Digestive healing. Wheatgrass is exceptionally alkalizing, high in fiber, and anti-inflammatory; all these properties lend themselves perfectly to gastrointestinal support. In fact, research has shown that daily consumption of wheatgrass is an effective treatment for stomach conditions like ulcerative colitis.

A study published in the Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology found that a daily wheatgrass juice regimen led to “significant reductions in the overall disease activity index,” as well as an improvement of many symptoms and markers of the condition.[3]

Remember, though: drinking a shot of wheatgrass juice everyday will not magically counteract the negative effects of an unhealthy, inflammatory diet, so be sure that your wheatgrass juice regimen is a part of an overall digestion-healing diet.

Disease treatment and prevention. While the verdict is still out on many of the disease-healing capacities that enthusiasts ascribe to wheatgrass, there are a number of therapeutic applications that have been borne out by research.

A medical review of various studies and clinical trials reported that wheatgrass can be effectively used in the treatment of cancer (to attenuate the negative effects of chemotherapy, and to fight cancer cells directly), arthritis, liver disease, diabetes, and obesity.[4]

How to start enjoying wheatgrass

I know…enjoy is a strong word. But the taste really isn’t so bad, especially once you get used to it. Besides, if the flavor really is too much for you, just add wheatgrass juice to smoothies (some fruits and nut butter will mask the taste).

If you’re not accustomed to a healthy, nutrient-dense diet, start off slow with wheatgrass (begin with one ounce of wheatgrass per day, and work your way up). Detox symptoms can occur if you don’t slowly accustom yourself to wheatgrass juice, so listen to your body.

Most health experts agree that you shouldn’t drink wheatgrass juice after a meal, as doing so causes stomach upset for some people. Instead, drink it on an empty stomach, in a smoothie, or with a light serving of fruits or vegetables.

Vitamin C is making a serious comeback. As we’ve discussed in past articles, researchers of the early to mid 20th century became obsessed with the seemingly miraculous healing capacities of high-dose ascorbic acid (the technical name for vitamin C). The work of these pioneers was largely shunned by the mainstream medical community, however, and vitamin C returned to its status as “just another vitamin.”

More recent research has begun to restore vitamin C to its former glory, though, with many experts wondering whether the vitamin-C-optimists of the 1940s were right all along.

One prominent study demonstrated that intravenous vitamin C dramatically outshines even the strongest antibiotics for treating sepsis—one doctor found that it reduced the mortality rate of his sepsis patients from as high as 50% to a mere 1%.[1]

Other studies have found that vitamin C is an invaluable tool for fighting cancer. It works through a wide variety of healing mechanisms (none of which carry the horrendous side effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatments), and has been shown to be effective against cancers of the ovaries,[2] pancreas,[3] prostate, bladder, skin, breast, lung, thyroid, and more.[4]

And that’s just a few impressive examples of what modern researchers have been discovering about vitamin C. It’s becoming increasingly clear that vitamin C is highly underestimated, and that it deserves a prominent place in mainstream medicine. It doesn’t just prevent scurvy, but also can act as a powerful tool for treating serious illness and reclaiming the health of the whole body.

And now another, somewhat unexpected benefit has been added to the list of vitamin C’s marvels: natural stress relief.

How vitamin C lowers cortisol levels and manages stress naturally

For some time, researchers have been fascinated by the connection between vitamin C and physical performance optimization. They’ve observed that vitamin C perfectly supports the body before, during, and after physical exertion—and even that supplementing daily with vitamin C can confer the same cardiovascular benefits as exercise.[5]

Over the course of these studies, researchers something very interesting: high-dose vitamin C supplementation consistently reduces levels of cortisol, adrenaline, and other markers for heat-induced stress[6] during high-intensity exercise.[7] Since these chemicals are linked with the body’s overall stress response (physiological or otherwise), could vitamin C also attenuate psychological stress response?

The answer is a resounding yes. German researchers carried out a randomized controlled trial and published their results in the journal Psychopharmacology. They subjected study 120 study participants to acute psychological stress using what’s called the Trier Social Stress Test (which consists of on-the-spot mental arithmetic and public speaking). Half of the group was given 1,000 milligrams of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) before the test, and half was given a placebo.

The vitamin C group displayed improved markers of psychological stress across the board: lower systolic blood pressure, lower diastolic blood pressure, lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol, faster cortisol salivary recovery (meaning that cortisol spikes associated with acute psychological stress recovered to baseline more quickly), and more favorable subjective stress response to the test.

Those who were given vitamin C even reported that they felt “less stressed” right after taking it. This stands to reason, as previous research discovered that administration of high-dose vitamin C literally halts the secretion of cortisol in animals.

And because cortisol is one of the primary hormones through which your body modulates stress response, controlling it with vitamin C represents a promising step forward in the treatment of stress and anxiety.

How to begin your own vitamin C regimen

As you can probably see by now, everyone can benefit from vitamin C supplementation. This incredible nutrient played a prominent role in the evolution of our immune systems—our bodies used to manufacture its own supply of ascorbic acid to fight pathogens, inflammation, and oxidative stress (many mammals still have this built-in mechanism).

Due to what researchers call an “inborn error of carbohydrate metabolism,” our livers now contain an enzyme that blocks the synthesis of vitamin C. One fascinating study does claim, however, that human adrenal glands secrete small amounts of vitamin C as part of the body’s natural stress response,[8] but it’s nowhere near the level that our livers used to produce.

Of all the nutrient deficiencies discussed, vitamin C is certainly not the most common. It’s almost invariably associated with scurvy, a condition characterized by mood imbalance, connective tissue defects, rashes, impaired wound healing, and even internal bleeding.

Scurvy occurs in circumstances of dire malnutrition—such conditions are still endured in developing countries, and sailors historically struggled with it (because vitamin-C-rich fruits and vegetables couldn’t be preserved onboard during long voyages). But surely it’s no longer a concern in the developed world?

Is vitamin C deficiency more common than we think?

Scurvy is admittedly a state of extreme deficiency, and one which is very uncommon, especially in the United States. Less than 20,000 cases of scurvy are reported annually in the United States, and it’s estimated that only around 6% of the population has ever suffered from the condition (probably from a combination of nutrient-poor diet and preexisting medical issues that interrupt the process of nutrient absorption).

As recently as 2016, though, major media outlets like the BBC reported that scurvy may be making a comeback in the developed world—hospital admissions related to scurvy increased 27% between 2009 and 2014.[1] This may not seem like much, but it’s an important reminder that vitamin C deficiency is still worthy of our concern.

If you don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables, routinely fast or engage in restrictive dieting, have a medical condition like Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis that inhibits nutrient absorption, use drugs or alcohol frequently, or smoke, you should be especially careful. These factors place you at high risk for vitamin C deficiency, so consider supplementing with a high-bioavailability vitamin C product (and altering your lifestyle habits whenever possible).

Here’s a quick checklist of vitamin C deficiency symptoms to watch out for:

  1. Frequent illness and other signs of poor immune function.

  2. Fatigue

Even if you’re not currently experiencing any of these symptoms, though, don’t write off vitamin C just yet. Research into the mechanisms of this amazing nutrient are beginning to redefine the terms of deficiency. Due to the complex and multi-faceted role that vitamin C plays in the body, individuals can suffer the effects of insufficient vitamin C long before any symptoms begin to present (and certainly before they progress to full-blown scurvy).

And because of its seemingly miraculous healing capacities, having anything less than optimal levels of vitamin C (and thus missing out on its incredible benefits) is its own brand of deficiency.

We’ve certainly encountered this issue with other nutrients, such as vitamin D. Our government-approved RDAs (recommended daily allowances) are often woefully low, because they target only the level necessary to prevent severe deficiency.

Fortunately, a growing number of health experts are starting to speak out about the power of optimizing our nutrient levels, rather than simply meeting our body’s barebones requirements. Dr. Mark Moyad, M.D. speaks particularly highly of vitamin C, claiming that “vitamin C may be the ideal nutrition marker for overall health. The more we study vitamin C, the better our understanding of how diverse it is in protecting our health, from cardiovascular, cancer, stroke, eye health [and] immunity to living longer.”[2]

There’s lots to love about vitamin C

Dr. Moyad is the latest in a long line of vitamin C enthusiasts. In a past article, we covered the research of Dr. Fredrick Klenner, who in the 1940s used high-dose vitamin C to cure a staggering number of serious diseases, such as leukemia, cancer, Herpes simplex infection, schizophrenia, multiple sclerosis, and even physical ailments like ruptured intervertebral discs.

Dr. Klenner’s work remains controversial to this day, but modern research is nevertheless revealing that vitamin C can be profoundly healing for a wide variety of health conditions, from sepsis to cancer to heart disease. The modern food industry is a well-oiled machine with many talents—it’s particularly adept at creating scalable, beautifully presented, and delicious products.

One trick it hasn’t mastered, though, is making healthy products. This is mainly because high-quality, preservative-free foods don’t come cheap, so large manufacturers tend to stick to lower-quality varieties and stuff them full of preservatives so they can keep them on store shelves for as long as possible. Ancient superfood, modern monstrosity

Don’t take the title of this article the wrong way; yogurt (in the right form) is undoubtedly a powerful health food. It might actually be one of the world’s most ancient superfoods (some historians can trace its roots back 6,000 years).

In its natural form, yogurt is teeming with probiotics, the beneficial bacteria that help maintain the health of your microbiome. As we covered in other articles, the symbiotic interaction between the hundreds of species of bacteria in your gut alone is bewilderingly complex.

We’ve barely begun to form an understanding of it, but we do know this: the microbiome is critically important for the health of entire being. When the microbiome is out of balance, the immune system can’t work properly, the brain falls into dysfunction, hormonal functions go haywire, and more. Taking care of your gut flora is one of the most important steps you can possibly take toward optimizing every aspect of your health.

The potential health benefits of yogurt, then, are not to be underestimated.

Yogurt manufacturers also understand this principle, and so coopted this narrative to boost the attractiveness of their product. There’s certainly nothing wrong with highlighting the virtues of your offering, but here’s the catch: commercial, store-bought yogurt rarely resembles the natural, healthful form of this ancient superfood.

Dannon, Yoplait, and other corporate yogurt brands are pumping out products that are anything but healthy.

Most store-bought yogurt is toxic junk food

The vast majority of commercially produced yogurt is a far cry from its probiotic-rich natural form. It’s probably not surprising to hear that Dannon, Yoplait, and other corporate yogurt brands are pumping out products that are anything but healthy. They’re not the only ones, though—even many of the seemingly healthy and “organic” brands of yogurt are suspect. Here’s why…

They’re made with conventional health-sapping milk. If you’ve read some of our other articles about conventionally produced milk, you already know that it’s bad news. Conventional milk is produced in grossly inhumane fashion, and it’s a hazard to your health—it contains synthetic hormones, pharmaceuticals, and an array of other contaminants. It’s no surprise, then, that consumption of conventional milk is linked to gastrointestinal issues, diabetes, cancer, infertility, and more.[1]

The contamination issues are usually solved when organic milk is used, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

They’re full of sweeteners and toxins. As if the health risks of dairy products weren’t bad enough on their own, food manufacturers also use a bevy of questionable substances in the processing of their yogurt. Independent analyses have discovered the presence of dimethylpolysiloxane—a carcinogen used in processing that often ends up in the final product—as well as heavy metals like titanium dioxide.[2] Furthermore, store-bought nearly always contains high levels of inflammatory sweeteners (sometimes even high fructose corn syrup).

They’re pasteurized (i.e. stripped of all living, beneficial components). Almost all yogurt producers (both conventional and organic) are required to pasteurize their final product. This means that they mix bacterial cultures with their ingredients, let it ferment, and then kill the newly thriving bacterial colony through pasteurization!

For this reason, woefully few store-bought yogurt brands actually contain any appreciable level of probiotics— the “Yogurt Report,” carried out by the Cornucopia Institute, demonstrated this fact by testing a wide variety of yogurt brands.[3] And since companies are only required to test probiotic content when the product is still in the factory, they’re allowed to get away with this blatantly false advertising.

Give your gut flora some real support

You may be able to purchase high-quality, probiotic-rich yogurt if you live near a well-stocked health food store, coop, or farmer’s market. The safest bet, though, is either to source yogurt made with raw milk from a local farmer, or to make your own yogurt at home.

We’ve written before about the amazing health benefits of essential oils.

You could hardly ask for a more perfect medicine: essential oils are literally the distilled essence of a medicinal (and usually wonderfully fragrant) plant. The ancient art of distillation (which has been practiced for at least 5500 years and counting) delivers a potent and focused version of the plant—the ancients actually considered their oils to be encapsulations of the plant’s spirit.

Modern medicine has shied fairly far from this spiritual characterization, but ancient and modern medicine agree that essential oils yield fantastic results when used in a huge variety of applications.

While each essential oil has its own laudable properties, lemon essential oil stands out as a particularly versatile one. At present, there have been over 500 studies conducted on it, and the verdict is clear: it’s a powerful tool that should always be kept handy for maintenance of both health and home.

In case you still think essential oils are just for aromatherapy (which can be functional and powerful in its own right, by the way), here’s a brief tour of lemon essential’s benefits.

Cleanser extraordinaire

Lemon essential oil is best known for its cleansing qualities. It’s been incorporated into many natural cleaning products because of its utility as a disinfectant, surface cleaner (and polisher), and grime remover. You can even use it with your laundry detergent (just add one drop) to leave your clothes extra clean and wonderfully scented.

And the cleansing potential of this essential oil definitely isn’t limited to your home—it also works as a detoxification agent on nearly every level of the body. It stimulates lymph drainage and supercharges the body’s natural detox system (whether consumed or rubbed on the neck with coconut oil).

Use it to disinfect your hands, mix it with baking soda and honey to make a deeply nourishing face wash, or add it to your homemade toothpaste to combat bad breath and improve oral health (mixing it with coconut oil and using the mixture for oil pulling works great too).

A study published in the International Journal of Food Microbiology even suggested that lemon essential oil has the strongest antimicrobial activity of all essential oils—meaning that it’s capable of cleansing your body of even the most virulent pathogens.[1]

Lemon essential oil is also a godsend for stomach health. It aids digestion, balances gut flora by killing only harmful bacteria (it’s even been shown to protect against E. coli and salmonella when added to food), and acts as a great remedy for abdominal and colic pain, nausea, and upset stomach. One study even showed that within two days, it can reduce the nausea and vomiting associated with pregnancy by up to 33%.[2]

It also works wonders for your metabolism, which means that your body is better able to absorb available nutrients and put them to good use.

A well-functioning metabolism is also able to run steadily and efficiently, which translates to greater weight loss. Amazingly, simply smelling the scent of lemon essential oil has been shown to increase the ease with which the body can break down fat. Adding just a couple drops to your water at least three times per day will provide even greater support for both weight loss and general digestive health.

Disease and stress resistance

Given that this healthful essential oil is potently detoxifying and microbiome-supporting, it should come as no surprise that it offers excellent immune support and builds stress resistance.
