More conservative researchers claim that the genetic mutation responsible for the loss of vitamin C synthesis is a neutral trait (in genetics, a trait is considered neutral when its loss is neither advantageous or disadvantageous). They contend that the importance of exogenous vitamin C is already highlighted by the fact that its RDA is higher than any other vitamin (60 mg/day), and that a normal diet provides the average person more than enough vitamin C.

Reactive oxygen species. Vitamin C is making a serious comeback. As we’ve discussed in past articles, researchers of the early to mid 20th century became obsessed with the seemingly miraculous healing capacities of high-dose ascorbic acid (the technical name for vitamin C). The work of these pioneers was largely shunned by the mainstream medical community, however, and vitamin C returned to its status as “just another vitamin.”

More recent research has begun to restore vitamin C to its former glory, though, with many experts wondering whether the vitamin-C-optimists of the 1940s were right all along.

One prominent study demonstrated that intravenous vitamin C dramatically outshines even the strongest antibiotics for treating sepsis—one doctor found that it reduced the mortality rate of his sepsis patients from as high as 50% to a mere 1%.[1]

Other studies have found that vitamin C is an invaluable tool for fighting cancer. It works through a wide variety of healing mechanisms (none of which carry the horrendous side effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatments), and has been shown to be effective against cancers of the ovaries,[2] pancreas,[3] prostate, bladder, skin, breast, lung, thyroid, and more.[4]

And that’s just a few impressive examples of what modern researchers have been discovering about vitamin C. It’s becoming increasingly clear that vitamin C is highly underestimated, and that it deserves a prominent place in mainstream medicine. How vitamin C lowers cortisol levels and manages stress naturally

For some time, researchers have been fascinated by the connection between vitamin C and physical performance optimization. They’ve observed that vitamin C perfectly supports the body before, during, and after physical exertion—and even that supplementing daily with vitamin C can confer the same cardiovascular benefits as exercise.[5]

Over the course of these studies, researchers something very interesting: high-dose vitamin C supplementation consistently reduces levels of cortisol, adrenaline, and other markers for heat-induced stress[6] during high-intensity exercise.[7] Since these chemicals are linked with the body’s overall stress response (physiological or otherwise), could vitamin C also attenuate psychological stress response?

The answer is a resounding yes. German researchers carried out a randomized controlled trial and published their results in the journal Psychopharmacology. They subjected study 120 study participants to acute psychological stress using what’s called the Trier Social Stress Test (which consists of on-the-spot mental arithmetic and public speaking). Half of the group was given 1,000 milligrams of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) before the test, and half was given a placebo.

The vitamin C group displayed improved markers of psychological stress across the board: lower systolic blood pressure, lower diastolic blood pressure, lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol, faster cortisol salivary recovery (meaning that cortisol spikes associated with acute psychological stress recovered to baseline more quickly), and more favorable subjective stress response to the test.

Those who were given vitamin C even reported that they felt “less stressed” right after taking it. This stands to reason, as previous research discovered that administration of high-dose vitamin C literally halts the secretion of cortisol in animals.

And because cortisol is one of the primary hormones through which your body modulates stress response, controlling it with vitamin C represents a promising step forward in the treatment of stress and anxiety.

How to begin your own vitamin C regimen

As you can probably see by now, everyone can benefit from vitamin C supplementation. This incredible nutrient played a prominent role in the evolution of our immune systems—our bodies used to manufacture its own supply of ascorbic acid to fight pathogens, inflammation, and oxidative stress (many mammals still have this built-in mechanism).

Of all the nutrient deficiencies discussed, vitamin C is certainly not the most common. It’s almost invariably associated with scurvy, a condition characterized by mood imbalance, connective tissue defects, rashes, impaired wound healing, and even internal bleeding.

Scurvy occurs in circumstances of dire malnutrition—such conditions are still endured in developing countries, and sailors historically struggled with it (because vitamin-C-rich fruits and vegetables couldn’t be preserved onboard during long voyages). But surely it’s no longer a concern in the developed world?

Is vitamin C deficiency more common than we think?

Scurvy is admittedly a state of extreme deficiency, and one which is very uncommon, especially in the United States. Less than 20,000 cases of scurvy are reported annually in the United States, and it’s estimated that only around 6% of the population has ever suffered from the condition (probably from a combination of nutrient-poor diet and preexisting medical issues that interrupt the process of nutrient absorption).

As recently as 2016, though, major media outlets like the BBC reported that scurvy may be making a comeback in the developed world—hospital admissions related to scurvy increased 27% between 2009 and 2014.[1] This may not seem like much, but it’s an important reminder that vitamin C deficiency is still worthy of our concern.

If you don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables, routinely fast or engage in restrictive dieting, have a medical condition like Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis that inhibits nutrient absorption, use drugs or alcohol frequently, or smoke, you should be especially careful. Dr. Moyad is the latest in a long line of vitamin C enthusiasts. In a past article, we covered the research of Dr. Fredrick Klenner, who in the 1940s used high-dose vitamin C to cure a staggering number of serious diseases, such as leukemia, cancer, Herpes simplex infection, schizophrenia, multiple sclerosis, and even physical ailments like ruptured intervertebral discs.

Dr. Klenner’s work remains controversial to this day, but modern research is nevertheless revealing that vitamin C can be profoundly healing for a wide variety of health conditions, from sepsis to cancer to heart disease. For all its wonders, modern medicine still has its limitations—perhaps even more than we usually like to admit.

Serious infections provide a window of insight into these limitations; one glance at medical statistics is enough to remind us that even our most powerful antibiotics and most cutting-edge interventions are sometimes helpless in the face of highly virulent bacteria and viruses.

You might remember from our previous articles that antibiotics are extremely hard on the body. They indiscriminately kill bacteria (including the good bacteria that critically support for vast array of bodily functions), hamper the immune system, and increase the risk of antibiotic resistance (wherein bacteria mutate into stronger, more deadly versions of themselves).

Antibiotics also do little to address the systemic inflammation and oxidative stress that accompany sepsis.

All of these risks might be acceptable if antibiotics were a guaranteed measure against sepsis. As evidenced by the statistics above, though, this is not the case. An increasing number of physicians recognize that the risks posed by antibiotics are untenable, given that up to 50% of sepsis patients still lose their lives.

Until recently, though, there were very few viable alternatives, and doctors were left with no option but to administer high-dose antibiotics and hope for the best. In 2016, however, one doctor discovered that intravenous vitamin C may be exactly the sepsis treatment for which the medical world has been searching.

A humble vitamin with miraculous results

Prior to 2016, researchers had already explored the mechanisms by which vitamin C can reduce sepsis mortality.[2]

Dr. Paul Marik of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital tested the validity of their findings when faced with a nearly hopeless case of sepsis. A 48-year-old women under his care in the ICU was facing almost certain death—a severe case of sepsis had already caused her kidneys and lungs to shut down.

In a final attempt to save her life, Dr. Marik administered an intravenous mixture outlined by previous research: vitamin C, thiamine (vitamin B1), and corticosteroids (to ease the inflammation caused by rampant immune response). Amazingly, the treatment worked, and by the next morning it was clear that she would enjoy a full recovery.

Dr. Marik’s success sparked a string of trials and studies over the past year, all of which have yielded very promising results. Dr. Marik reports that the administration of intravenous vitamin C lowered the mortality rate of his sepsis patients to 1 percent.[3]

These findings have been supported by subsequent studies,[4] and one review confirmed that corticosteroids are not the ingredient that provide the greatest benefit (and that steroids can actually be counterproductive for sepsis treatment when administered without vitamin C).[5]

While some experts are still skeptical, Dr. Marik’s work has inspired a great deal of enthusiasm overall. A “sepsis treatment protocol for medical professionals” has now been posted online by the Eastern Virginia Medical School, and many experts are urging that further research be conducted.[6] And unlike many alternative medical treatments, IV vitamin C treatment for sepsis has already been featured and shared across many mainstream media platforms.

Vitamin C is massively undervalued

This discovery is great news for vitamin C, and hopefully leads to a reevaluation of the vitamin’s potential. As we’ve covered in past article, vitamin C is tremendously underutilized as a natural medicine. Over the years, a string of independent physicians have discovered its ability to treat a wide variety of illnesses, including many supposedly incurable ailments.

Unsurprisingly, the findings of these vitamin C pioneers were ridiculed and dismissed into obscurity. With Dr. Marik’s clinical findings already gathering momentum, though, it seems that mainstream medicine may final start to believe in the untapped capacities of vitamin C.

And don’t think that vitamin C is only useful for treating sepsis and preventing scurvy—it offers a wealth of potential benefits to nearly anyone. As we’ve written about before, vitamin C is a highly underestimated medicine.

While it’s common knowledge that this essential nutrient will boost the immune system and prevent scurvy, a growing body of research is showing it’s still not given nearly enough credit.

Scientists have discovered that most mammals—with the exception of monkeys, guinea pigs, and humans—naturally produce vitamin C (ascorbic acid) within their bodies.[1] This endogenous vitamin C functions as a sort of supercharged extension of the immune system, warding off nearly any illness that comes the animal’s way. This might very well be the reason why so few animals in the wild fall ill.

Most mammals naturally produce vitamin C.  But unlike mammals humans lack the ability to make Vitamin C

Humans used to have this same ability, but due to what researchers call an “inborn error of carbohydrate metabolism,” our livers now contain an enzyme protein called L-gulonolactone (GLO) that blocks ascorbic acid synthesis.[2]

Some experts believe that this mechanism simply became unnecessary because of a diet rich in vitamin C. If this is the case, though, why don’t our diets and vitamin C capsules endow us with super-healing abilities?

It seems that it’s a matter of dosage.

The current RDA for vitamin C is 90 milligrams—a paltry amount compared to the 13,000 milligrams that goats and other mammals endogenously produce daily (and they produce much greater amounts when placed under stress).[3] 90 milligrams will prevent scurvy, but that’s it.

The real magic of Vitamin C begins at higher daily doses.

In the 1940’s, a doctor named Fredrick Klenner demonstrated that high doses of vitamin C (up to 300,000 milligrams a day) successfully combat a vast array of serious and even supposedly incurable conditions.

His list is a shocking one: pneumonia, encephalitis, Herpes zoster (shingles), Herpes simplex, mononucleosis, pancreatitis, hepatitis, bladder infections, alcoholism, arthritis, cancer, leukemia, atherosclerosis, ruptured intervertebral discs, high cholesterol, corneal ulcers, diabetes, glaucoma, schizoprenia, burns, infections, heat stroke, radiation burns, heavy metal poisoning, venomous bites, multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue, and more.

Needless to say, Dr. Klenner’s work was dismissed as quackery, and the medical mainstream is only beginning to reconsider the miraculous healing potential of vitamin C. One area in which it shows great promise is cancer treatment.

Wide-spectrum cancer support

High-dose vitamin C therapy is a not a new method. Linus Pauling, a Nobel Prize-winning doctor and scientist, used vitamin C to treat cancer successfully as early as the 1930’s—but he too was written off the medical community.

New research is beginning to clear his legacy, however. Within the past five years, vetted studies have conclusively demonstrated that, in sufficient doses, vitamin C can be immensely helpful in the treatment of cancers of the ovaries,[4] pancreas,[5] prostate, bladder, skin, breast, lung, and thyroid, as well as B-cell lymphoma.[6]

While the mechanisms by which vitamin C aids cancer treatment are myriad, these studies primarily focused on two: the suppression of inflammation and the destruction of cancer cells with a specific genetic mutation.

As you’ve most likely heard before, most experts agree that inflammation is at heart of nearly every major illness—and cancer is no exception. In fact, chronic inflammation is one of the primary markers for cancer; higher levels of inflammation always signal both a higher risk of developing cancer and a lower chance of recovering from the condition.

This is because inflammation hampers the body on every level; it stifles the immune system (and thus the body’s ability to fight cancer), increases the prevalence of oxidative stress (a key risk factor for the development and spread of cancer), and even aids the initiation and metastasis of tumors.

High-dose vitamin C therapy ameliorates this issue by significantly lowering levels of both pro-inflammatory cytokines and C-reactive protein tumor markers, while boosting the immune system and lessening the negative side effects of chemotherapy in the process.[8]

And vitamin C can also directly kill cancer cells, particularly those with a specific mutation in KRAS and BRAF genes. Cells with this mutation have an increased tendency to transport the oxidized form of vitamin C, dehydroascorbic acid (DHA), across cell membranes.

One studied demonstrated that this abundance of DHA deactivates the enzyme needed to process glucose, effectively killing the cancer cell by cutting off its food supply.[9]

Not all forms of vitamin C are created equal

In order to achieve these kinds of benefits from vitamin C, though, we must supplement with the right form. Those run-of-the-mill, citrus-flavored pills that fill store shelves won’t cut it.

The studies cited above all implemented either intravenous or liposomal vitamin C. Liposomal supplements used to be few and far between, but now that there’s a number of companies making excellent liposomal vitamin C, getting expensive and unpleasant injections is no longer necessary (unless your doctor recommends it as part of a treatment protocol).
