Vitamin D used to be discussed simply in the context of rickets, the dramatic weakening and softening of bones caused by severe calcium and phosphorous deficiency (a condition directly linked to severe vitamin D deficiency).

This prescription is supported by other studies too, including one that conclusively demonstrated that vitamin D supplementation can prevent pre-diabetes from progressing into fully developed type 2 diabetes. And vitamin D’s diabetes-healing abilities aren’t limited to prevention—many studies have demonstrated that raising vitamin D levels can aid those who already have diabetes, as well.

One prominent study found that type 2 diabetics who were given 50,000 IU of vitamin D per week for eight weeks experienced reductions in both fasting plasma glucose and insulin,[3] and another study demonstrated that vitamin D supplementation increased insulin sensitivity by a whopping 54%.[4]

While the mechanisms by which vitamin D works its magic are complex, there are a couple notable reasons why it’s particularly healing for metabolic disorders. For starters, studies have shown that vitamin D is one of the primary factors that regulate and normalize insulin secretion.[5] Other experts believe that its effect upon calcium and phosphorous metabolism (the mechanism by which it keeps bones strong) is linked to a modulation of glucose metabolism (and thus to insulin sensitivity). Vitamin D even heals diabetes epigenetically by upregulating (i.e. “turning on”) the gene that controls insulin receptors, thereby increasing insulin sensitivity.[6]

So whether you’re already living with diabetes or simply want to prevent its onset, maintaining optimal vitamin D serum levels is a wise choice.

Get tested and take action

First things first: get your vitamin D level tested in order to determine whether you have a deficiency (the test can easily be ordered by any doctor, and there are many at-home test kits available too). If you’ve never supplemented with vitamin D, you’re probably deficient, but it’s still helpful to know exactly how far your serum levels are from optimal.

Next, make a plan that allows you to maintain an optimal level of 40-60 ng/ml year-round. Sun exposure is the easiest and most powerful way to get vitamin D (contrary to popular opinion, sun avoidance is much more dangerous than the sun itself). Depending on your skin tone, 8-24 minutes of direct sun exposure (on as much of your body as possible) will allow your body to manufacture all the vitamin D it needs.

This approach poses problems during non-summer months, though (especially in northern latitudes), so you’ll need to get your vitamin D from other sources too. Eating vitamin-D-rich foods like fatty fish, eggs, and vitamin-D-fortified products are a good start, but supplementation is by far your best option.

It’s fair to say that turmeric has earned its title as a functional food of unrivaled versatility. It seems to have the uncanny ability to take on any ailment, illness, or condition—and this claim is borne out by both ancient practice and modern research.

Ginger is a wondrously healing and versatile plant.

Besides being a pungent, spicy addition to a wide variety of dishes, it also offers an impressive array of specific health benefits, many of which we’ve discussed in previous articles.

Perhaps most excitingly, a flurry of new studies point directly to ginger’s ability to improve nearly every marker of type 2 diabetes (without any of the side effects of conventional diabetes drugs).

A 2017 study published in the International Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism went so far as to state that the “use of safe and natural foods instead of medications is now [being] considered by many scientists” (my italics). [9]

This is a monumental step toward recognizing that type 2 diabetes doesn’t just have to be “managed” with drugs, but instead can be completely reversed with proper diet and lifestyle (and a little help from particularly anti-diabetic plants like ginger).

In this double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 50 patients with type 2 diabetes were randomly divided into two groups. One group received 2000 milligrams of ginger supplements daily for 10 weeks, and the other group received a placebo.

The group who took ginger experienced a significant improvement in multiple diabetes markers, including fasting blood glucose, hemoglobin A1C (which literally measures the damage being done by sugars to red blood cells throughout the body), and the ratio of LDL to HDL cholesterol.[10]

Supporting studies have confirmed these therapeutic benefits, and have added to the list of diabetes markers that ginger can help improve. The many health benefits of enokis

In case deliciousness isn’t quite enough of an incentive for you to include enoki mushrooms in your diet, don’t worry: there’s lots more to love about them. Enoki mushrooms certainly more than measure up when it comes to nutrient density. They’re brimming with a variety of B vitamins, minerals like copper, calcium, iron, potassium, and selenium, a small amount of highly absorbable protein, and essential amino acids like lysine, ergothioneine, and valine (all of which maintain the integrity of metabolic function and optimize immune response).

Other research has shown that beta-glucans act as potent immunomodulators—this means they’re equally adept at balancing immune deficiency or overactivity as is necessary. They activate the body’s pathogen-destroying macrophages, stimulate white blood cell production, and even improve insulin resistance and blood cholesterol levels.[3]

Cancer-fighting compounds. December 13th was National Cocoa Day—‘tis certainly the season for enjoying a nice cup of hot chocolate by the fire.

But cocoa is much more than just an enjoyable winter beverage. How cacao delays the onset of diabetes

First and foremost, it’s important to state that type 2 diabetes is, in the vast majority of cases, an entirely curable condition that does not require medication. This truth runs contrary to the experience of millions of Americans, who are told that they can only “manage” their condition with pharmaceutical drugs.

Nonetheless, the condition can be reversed through proper lifestyle (and a little help from functional foods like cacao). In order to understand why cacao should be a part of a diabetes-healing lifestyle, let’s start with an overview of how diabetes works.

Diabetes is essentially characterized by a malfunction of insulin and leptin activity in the body. Insulin is the hormone released by the beta cells in your pancreas; it regulates blood sugar levels by storing extra energy (glycogen) that would otherwise end up in the blood.

Leptin is the hormone released by the body’s fat cells; it regulates energy balance by letting you know when you’re full (it works in conjunction with ghrelin, the hormone that lets you know when you’re hungry.)

As prediabetes and type 2 diabetes develops, the body becomes desensitized to both insulin and leptin—this results in obesity, elevated blood sugar, and the resulting cell damage that accompanies these conditions. Researchers noticed that the pancreas’s beta cells are extremely sensitive to oxidative stress, and theorized that beta cell performance could be enhanced through the use of antioxidants.

Here’s where cacao comes in. A study published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry showed that the antioxidant flavanols in cacao can lower obesity rates and increase the body’s ability to manage blood sugar, especially when combined with a high-fat diet.[4]

Supplementary research has revealed that these cacao flavanols, especially one called catechin, strengthen beta cells and make them more resistant to oxidative stress by boosting mitochondrial function.[5]

  • Eat plenty of soluble fiber (especially in the form of low-sugar berries, nuts, and cucumbers) and insoluble fiber (especially dark leafy greens).
  • Lower your carbohydrate intake, especially packaged foods, refined flour products, and sugars. The majority of your carb consumption should be in the form of whole foods (especially vegetables and low-sugar fruits).
  • Eat lots of healthy fats, such as coconut oil and olive oil, avocados, grass-fed butter, and raw nuts. As mentioned in the study data above, healthy fats heal cell mitochondria and increase the benefits of cacao’s flavanols.
  • Exercise more often, drink plenty of pure filtered water or spring water, and make sure you’re getting enough sleep (ideally at least eight hours every night).

When it comes to vibrant health, sometimes the smallest things make the biggest difference.

At the risk of making this section read like one of those comically long-winded side effect lists during pharmaceutical commercials, let’s put it this way: if you’re not specifically supplementing with magnesium, you’re probably deficient in it.

These drugs can also cause ulcers, bleeding in the stomach and intestines, and other related gastrointestinal issues—particularly with long-term use. Turmeric carries no side effects whatsoever, and its health benefits as a high-level adaptogen only become more and more pronounced with long-term use. And because a 2014 study demonstrated that turmeric works just as well as (or better than) ibuprofen at relieving aches, pains, and other effects of inflammation, choosing it over NSAID’s is a no-brainer.[2]


Steroids and corticosteroids (the latter of which mimic adrenal hormones) are used to treat a number of serious ailments connected with inflammation, such as immune-related skin rashes and conditions, lupus, asthma, vasculitis (inflammation of the blood vessels), myositis (chronic inflammation of muscle tissue), gout, and rheumatoid arthritis. While these drugs have a role to play in medicine, they also have profound shortcomings—the relief they offer is fleeting, and their usage comes with the risk of an encyclopedic list of side effects.

Several studies have shown that turmeric is capable of offering relief from these same conditions, without any of the worrying side effects. One prominent study showed that curcumin, one of the active constituents in turmeric, works just as well as the corticosteroid dexamethasone for treating respiratory issues and injuries due to lung transplantation.[3]

Diabetes and glucose drugs

The incidence of diabetes has reached epidemic proportions. One of the reasons that pharmaceutical methods of treatment have been so unsuccessful is because of their limited approach—nearly all diabetes drugs target one (or at most, a few) of the primary symptoms of diabetes, without actually addressing underlying causes.

Turmeric tackles both at once. Its incredible anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities—thanks in large part to curcumin—quell the systemic inflammation of oxidative stress that often creates disastrous complications for diabetics. And according to a 2009 study, curcumin works 400 times better than Metformin for both increasing glucose sensitivity. [4]

Cholesterol and heart drugs

Heart disease often goes hand in hand with diabetes, because the rampant oxidative stress caused by diabetes damages arteries and causes a buildup of cholesterol. Traditionally, statin drugs like Lipitor are offered as the solution. Same story here, though: statins don’t always offer consistent results, don’t address the root cause (the oxidative stress), and can cause potentially fatal liver and kidney damage.

Once again, turmeric wins the prize by working as effectively as leading statins at lowering cholesterol—and it achieves lasting results by eliminating the underlying oxidative stress and inflammation. Curcumin is usually given the credit for these feats, but attempts to create a synthetic curcumin-derived pharmaceutical haven’t been successful, which suggests that turmeric has other undiscovered tricks up its sleeve.

Drugs for depression and other mood disorders

Antidepressants are drugs with notoriously inconsistent results. New studies even suggest that the pharmaceutical industry’s theory about the mechanism of depression is almost wholly incorrect, which leads many to believe that antidepressants have been barking up the wrong tree for some time. Most worrying of all, antidepressants seem to increase the risk of relapsing into depression later—“depression” is literally listed right on the package insert as one of the potential side effects of Prozac.[5]

A study published in Phytotherapy Research pitted Prozac against a daily turmeric regimen, and you can probably already guess what they discovered: turmeric was just as effective at managing depression, and not a single patient taking turmeric complained of side effects.[6]


The horrific effects of chemotherapy are well-known—and unfortunately, its frightening risks don’t even come with a guarantee of success. While it’s still the primary cancer treatment method (along with radiation therapy), it’s considered a barbarous practice by many health experts because of the damage it inflicts on the body’s healthy cells.

A significant number of studies demonstrate that turmeric’s cancer-fighting power is on par with chemotherapy. It combats the disease by strengthening the immune system, directly killing cancer cells (without harming healthy cells), and inhibiting the growth and spread of cancer. Chemotherapy also kills more cancer cells, and does so with less severe side effects, when combined with turmeric.

Turmeric is always a good choice

In short, it seems there’s no limit to turmeric’s healing capabilities—it’s foods like this for which the word “panacea” was made. Even if you aren’t suffering from any of the conditions mentioned above, integrating turmeric into your life is always a wise choice. By using it to ward off inflammation and oxidative stress, you’ll be preventing a huge variety of ailments.

But not all forms of turmeric are created equal…
