You’ve most likely had the unfortunate experience of finding out just how awful the flu can be. This year’s flu season in the United States is already one of the worst on record—new strains of the influenza virus have sprawled across 46 states and claimed the lives of 106 people—and health agencies fear that it will get even worse.

For example, the number of Californians under 65 who’ve died of the flu has jumped to 42, compared with nine at the same time last year, state officials said Friday.

The flu season, which runs from October through May, typically peaks in February. Public health officials say they don’t yet know whether the flu season is peaking earlier than normal, or if this year will be a particularly tough one for the flu.

“We are still early in the season but … the number of deaths so far is significantly higher than at the same time in the previous several influenza seasons,” said Dr. James Watt, chief of the division of communicable disease control with the California Department of Public Health, in a press call with reporters this week.

Thousands of people in California started showing up at doctors’ offices and hospitals in December with the flu. Since then, emergency rooms have been crowded with long wait times, and patients have struggled to get doctor appointments as well as flu medications.

Remember the H1N1 “epidemic” of 2009 that had everyone shaking in their boots? In a perspective article published in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers reported that during the current flu season, Australia reported nearly five times the number of laboratory-confirmed influenza notifications compared to the 2009 H1N1 outbreak.[1]

It’s certainly not a pretty picture, but there are still plenty of measures you can take to prevent the onset and spread of this nasty bug.

How to protect yourself during this (and every) flu season

First and foremost, remember that prevention is the best treatment. The influenza virus is extraordinarily skilled at replicating and spreading to new hosts, but you can avoid catching it if your body is in a proper state of balance (even if you’re living with someone who is already ill from it). Try not to think of the flu as a bug to be avoided (because it’s everywhere), and instead focus on optimizing your body’s ability to keep it at bay.

Here are some principles and practices to get you started.

Proper sleep. Let’s start with the obvious: your body heals and recharges while you’re asleep, so if you’re not getting enough optimal sleep, you simply can’t expect your immune system to work properly. While many people have their own opinions about how many hours of sleep are needed to maintain optimal health, scientific data on the subject is fairly conclusive.

As we reported in a past article, researchers at the Center for Human Sleep Science at the University of California, Berkeley define “sleep deprivation” as anything less than seven hours of sleep per night.

Chronically getting less than seven hours of sleep per night (especially for extended periods of time) has been correlated with decreased cognitive performance, cognitive decline, increased degenerative disease risk, and more.[2]

It should come as no surprise, then, that sleep deprivation dramatically increases the chances of contracting influenza. Proper sleep hygiene is always important, but it deserves particular attention during flu season.

Proper diet. The same goes for maintaining an antioxidant-rich, nutrient-dense diet. If the body is not fueled with the nutrients it needs to thrive, it will have a difficult time resisting infection with the flu virus and other pathogens. Eat plenty of leafy greens, organic fruits and veggies of all colors, whole grains, raw nuts, and healthy fats and proteins.

Avoid junk foods and snacks, processed and packaged foods, refined sugar, and simple carbohydrates, all of which will lead to systemic inflammation (which diverts the immune system’s much-needed attention away from preventing and fighting the flu.

Avoid nutrient deficiencies, which also create “points of weakness” that make the body more susceptible to infection. Studies have found that optimal levels of vitamin D are especially important, and that vitamin D supplementation can offer dramatic protection against the onset and spread of influenza.[3]

Think twice about the flu shot. You probably noticed that we haven’t yet mentioned anything about getting a flu shot as a preventative measure. Here’s why: based on data on Australia’s recent flu season, health agencies are worried that this year’s flu vaccine will be less than 10% effective.[4]

Flu shots have other potential risks and downsides too, but regardless of your perspective, this low-percentage efficacy should make it clear that you cannot rely solely on the flu shot to prevent the onset of the flu (as much as vaccine manufacturers would love for this to be the case).

Try natural flu remedies. While using the lifestyle practices above to prevent the flu in the first place is always your best bet, there are also plenty of natural remedies that have a time-tested track record for fighting the flu.

Elderberry has been shown to decrease the duration of influenza A and B by four days or more.[5]

The data behind high-dose vitamin C is even more impressive: hourly administration of 1,000mg attenuated symptoms by 85%, and completely prevented the spread of symptoms to a healthy control group.[6]

Manuka honey, which we’ve already praised highly in past articles, has also been shown to exhibit potent anti-viral properties against all known strains of the flu.[7]

Of all the nutrient deficiencies discussed, vitamin C is certainly not the most common. It’s almost invariably associated with scurvy, a condition characterized by mood imbalance, connective tissue defects, rashes, impaired wound healing, and even internal bleeding.

Scurvy occurs in circumstances of dire malnutrition—such conditions are still endured in developing countries, and sailors historically struggled with it (because vitamin-C-rich fruits and vegetables couldn’t be preserved onboard during long voyages). But surely it’s no longer a concern in the developed world?

Is vitamin C deficiency more common than we think?

Scurvy is admittedly a state of extreme deficiency, and one which is very uncommon, especially in the United States. Less than 20,000 cases of scurvy are reported annually in the United States, and it’s estimated that only around 6% of the population has ever suffered from the condition (probably from a combination of nutrient-poor diet and preexisting medical issues that interrupt the process of nutrient absorption).

As recently as 2016, though, major media outlets like the BBC reported that scurvy may be making a comeback in the developed world—hospital admissions related to scurvy increased 27% between 2009 and 2014.[1] This may not seem like much, but it’s an important reminder that vitamin C deficiency is still worthy of our concern.

If you don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables, routinely fast or engage in restrictive dieting, have a medical condition like Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis that inhibits nutrient absorption, use drugs or alcohol frequently, or smoke, you should be especially careful. These factors place you at high risk for vitamin C deficiency, so consider supplementing with a high-bioavailability vitamin C product (and altering your lifestyle habits whenever possible).

Here’s a quick checklist of vitamin C deficiency symptoms to watch out for:

  1. Frequent illness and other signs of poor immune function.

  2. Fatigue

  3. Depression and other mood imbalances.

  4. Joint pain and inflammation

  5. Rashes, dryness, and other skin issues

  6. Dry and brittle hair and nails

  7. Periodontal issues such as swollen or bleeding gums

  8. Easy bruising and slow wound healing

  9. Frequent nosebleeds

Even if you’re not currently experiencing any of these symptoms, though, don’t write off vitamin C just yet. Research into the mechanisms of this amazing nutrient are beginning to redefine the terms of deficiency. Due to the complex and multi-faceted role that vitamin C plays in the body, individuals can suffer the effects of insufficient vitamin C long before any symptoms begin to present (and certainly before they progress to full-blown scurvy).

And because of its seemingly miraculous healing capacities, having anything less than optimal levels of vitamin C (and thus missing out on its incredible benefits) is its own brand of deficiency.

We’ve certainly encountered this issue with other nutrients, such as vitamin D. Our government-approved RDAs (recommended daily allowances) are often woefully low, because they target only the level necessary to prevent severe deficiency.

Fortunately, a growing number of health experts are starting to speak out about the power of optimizing our nutrient levels, rather than simply meeting our body’s barebones requirements. Dr. Mark Moyad, M.D. speaks particularly highly of vitamin C, claiming that “vitamin C may be the ideal nutrition marker for overall health. The more we study vitamin C, the better our understanding of how diverse it is in protecting our health, from cardiovascular, cancer, stroke, eye health [and] immunity to living longer.”[2]

There’s lots to love about vitamin C

Dr. Moyad is the latest in a long line of vitamin C enthusiasts. In a past article, we covered the research of Dr. Fredrick Klenner, who in the 1940s used high-dose vitamin C to cure a staggering number of serious diseases, such as leukemia, cancer, Herpes simplex infection, schizophrenia, multiple sclerosis, and even physical ailments like ruptured intervertebral discs.

Dr. Klenner’s work remains controversial to this day, but modern research is nevertheless revealing that vitamin C can be profoundly healing for a wide variety of health conditions, from sepsis to cancer to heart disease. This is because of its profound antioxidant capacity—fighting the free radicals generated by oxidative stress is centrally important for maintaining overall health and preventing disease.[3]

And here’s the best part: you can enjoy the many benefits of vitamin C easily and inexpensively. Always start with food, and don’t overthink it. While there’s some foods that are especially rich in vitamin C—like guavas, black currants, red and green peppers, kiwis, oranges, strawberries, papayas, broccoli, kale, parsley, and Brussel sprouts—you’ll do just fine as long as you eat a varied, colorful diet with lots of fruits and vegetables.

Once your body has a good foundation of food-sourced vitamin C, you can unlock the more acutely therapeutic benefits of this nutrient through supplementation.

As we’ve written about before, vitamin C is a highly underestimated medicine.

While it’s common knowledge that this essential nutrient will boost the immune system and prevent scurvy, a growing body of research is showing it’s still not given nearly enough credit.

Scientists have discovered that most mammals—with the exception of monkeys, guinea pigs, and humans—naturally produce vitamin C (ascorbic acid) within their bodies.[1] This endogenous vitamin C functions as a sort of supercharged extension of the immune system, warding off nearly any illness that comes the animal’s way. This might very well be the reason why so few animals in the wild fall ill.

Most mammals naturally produce vitamin C.  But unlike mammals humans lack the ability to make Vitamin C

Humans used to have this same ability, but due to what researchers call an “inborn error of carbohydrate metabolism,” our livers now contain an enzyme protein called L-gulonolactone (GLO) that blocks ascorbic acid synthesis.[2]

Some experts believe that this mechanism simply became unnecessary because of a diet rich in vitamin C. If this is the case, though, why don’t our diets and vitamin C capsules endow us with super-healing abilities?

It seems that it’s a matter of dosage.

The current RDA for vitamin C is 90 milligrams—a paltry amount compared to the 13,000 milligrams that goats and other mammals endogenously produce daily (and they produce much greater amounts when placed under stress).[3] 90 milligrams will prevent scurvy, but that’s it.

The real magic of Vitamin C begins at higher daily doses.

In the 1940’s, a doctor named Fredrick Klenner demonstrated that high doses of vitamin C (up to 300,000 milligrams a day) successfully combat a vast array of serious and even supposedly incurable conditions.

His list is a shocking one: pneumonia, encephalitis, Herpes zoster (shingles), Herpes simplex, mononucleosis, pancreatitis, hepatitis, bladder infections, alcoholism, arthritis, cancer, leukemia, atherosclerosis, ruptured intervertebral discs, high cholesterol, corneal ulcers, diabetes, glaucoma, schizoprenia, burns, infections, heat stroke, radiation burns, heavy metal poisoning, venomous bites, multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue, and more.

Needless to say, Dr. Klenner’s work was dismissed as quackery, and the medical mainstream is only beginning to reconsider the miraculous healing potential of vitamin C. One area in which it shows great promise is cancer treatment.

Wide-spectrum cancer support

High-dose vitamin C therapy is a not a new method. Linus Pauling, a Nobel Prize-winning doctor and scientist, used vitamin C to treat cancer successfully as early as the 1930’s—but he too was written off the medical community.

New research is beginning to clear his legacy, however. Within the past five years, vetted studies have conclusively demonstrated that, in sufficient doses, vitamin C can be immensely helpful in the treatment of cancers of the ovaries,[4] pancreas,[5] prostate, bladder, skin, breast, lung, and thyroid, as well as B-cell lymphoma.[6]

While the mechanisms by which vitamin C aids cancer treatment are myriad, these studies primarily focused on two: the suppression of inflammation and the destruction of cancer cells with a specific genetic mutation.

As you’ve most likely heard before, most experts agree that inflammation is at heart of nearly every major illness—and cancer is no exception. In fact, chronic inflammation is one of the primary markers for cancer; higher levels of inflammation always signal both a higher risk of developing cancer and a lower chance of recovering from the condition.

This is because inflammation hampers the body on every level; it stifles the immune system (and thus the body’s ability to fight cancer), increases the prevalence of oxidative stress (a key risk factor for the development and spread of cancer), and even aids the initiation and metastasis of tumors.

High-dose vitamin C therapy ameliorates this issue by significantly lowering levels of both pro-inflammatory cytokines and C-reactive protein tumor markers, while boosting the immune system and lessening the negative side effects of chemotherapy in the process.[8]

And vitamin C can also directly kill cancer cells, particularly those with a specific mutation in KRAS and BRAF genes. Cells with this mutation have an increased tendency to transport the oxidized form of vitamin C, dehydroascorbic acid (DHA), across cell membranes.

One studied demonstrated that this abundance of DHA deactivates the enzyme needed to process glucose, effectively killing the cancer cell by cutting off its food supply.[9]

Not all forms of vitamin C are created equal

In order to achieve these kinds of benefits from vitamin C, though, we must supplement with the right form. Those run-of-the-mill, citrus-flavored pills that fill store shelves won’t cut it.

The studies cited above all implemented either intravenous or liposomal vitamin C. Liposomal supplements used to be few and far between, but now that there’s a number of companies making excellent liposomal vitamin C, getting expensive and unpleasant injections is no longer necessary (unless your doctor recommends it as part of a treatment protocol).

While checking out at a local coop recently, we noticed a worrying headline on the cover of a popular health magazine: “Just To Be Safe, Avoid Taking Vitamins.” This sentence pretty perfectly sums up the air of paranoia and skepticism that surrounds the vitamin and supplement culture. Contamination scares, dubious studies depicting the supposed uselessness of supplements, and industry naysaying has eroded people’s confidence in the effectiveness of vitamins.

Supplementing properly can be somewhat expensive anyway, so if the “authorities” say that they aren’t worth the money, why not save some cash?

Although it does take a bit of work to find good vitamins and supplements, it is patently untrue that they’re useless. A mountain of evidence suggests that vitamin and mineral deficiency is one the leading contributors to nearly all major diseases. You can read more about a few of those deficiencies here and here.

In an ideal world, we’d get all the vitamins we need from food (after all, our ancestors didn’t exactly have access to health food stores). But we live in a world where pollution and near-constant stress saps our nutrient reserves and taxes our body with oxidation, and we consume food that is critically depleted of nutrients (because the ground in which it is grown has been depleted by unsustainable farming practices).

So here’s the reality of life for most people: supplementation is necessary to maintain optimal levels of vitamins and nutrients.

Perhaps one of the most undervalued vitamins of all is vitamin C. Ironically, it may be one of the most universally known and widely distributed of all vitamins, and yet it’s hardly ever given the credit that it deserves. This amazing compound has a long history of this kind of derision: governments ignored evidence suggesting that fresh fruit cures scurvy for nearly 100 years in the 18th and 19th centuries, and doctors from the 19th century to the present have been ridiculed for using this lowly vitamin as a medical tool.

It’s almost as if mainstream medicine refuses to believe that simple, natural solutions can be effective—only complicated, expensive, scientifically developed medical interventions deserve a badge of legitimacy. But centuries of practice, now coupled with emerging research, is finally leading more doctors to pay attention to the untapped potential of vitamin C.

A gym substitute?

A study from the University of Colorado in Boulder has revealed that, according to markers measured by the researchers, a daily regimen of vitamin C confers the same cardiovascular benefits as regular exercise for your heart. 

The goal of the study was to determine ways of supporting overweight or obese adults who are unable or unwilling to exercise (approximately 50% of the demographic). They focused on a protein called endothelin-1 (ET-1), which constricts blood vessels and makes them less responsive. Overweight and obese individuals nearly always have elevated levels of ET-1, which dramatically increases their risk of heart disease. Amazingly, the researchers found that taking a 500 mg time-release capsule of vitamin C every day decreased ET-1 levels just as much as daily exercise.

While nothing can or should be a permanent substitute for exercise, this study shows that vitamin C gives a head start to those who are unable to exercise. Another study even demonstrated that vitamin C deficiency is linked with higher body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage, and waist size—and thus that supplementing with it can help with weight control.[1]

And it offers something to those who already exercise regularly too: it massively magnifies the benefits of exercise by reducing oxidative stress,[2] improving overall muscle function, and decreasing recovery time.[3]

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg…

While this research is incredibly promising, it’s still a far cry from the work of Dr. Linus Pauling, the original vitamin C advocate. As early as the 1940’s (not long after the original synthesis of ascorbic acid), he cured a staggering array of supposedly incurable diseases with high doses of vitamin C. And Dr. Pauling was no quack—he won the Nobel Prize twice.

Despite his amazing success with his patients, Dr. Pauling’s work with vitamin C was either suppressed or ignored during his lifetime. Now, the scientific community is slowly and cautiously beginning to change their tune. Recent studies have revealed that people who receive the highest levels of vitamin C have an 80% reduced risk of heart attack and a 42% reduced risk of stroke.[4] It’s also been shown that vitamin C lowers blood pressure, strengthens endothelial function, and protects against the formation of arterial plaque.

During the studies that demonstrated all of these benefits, participants took between 500-2000 mg of vitamin C per day—doses that pale in comparison to the 10-12 gram daily dose that Dr. Linus Pauling recommended. And he considered those maintenance doses; for acute problems, he administered up to 300 grams per day.

We’re still barely scratching the surface of vitamin C’s potential.

All this still seems a bit extreme to most doctors, but Pauling’s results speak for themselves—and it’s no coincidence that the higher doses researchers use in modern studies, the more benefits they uncover.

3 More Reasons Why Your Heart Needs Vitamin C

According to Dr. Stephen Sinatra, vitamin C is a superstar for your heart health, improving it in the following ways: [5]

Making vitamin C work for you

As can be seen from the studies cited above, vitamin C is a wonderful ally for overweight and obese adults, as well as those wishing to prevent or treat heart disease. And since these conditions are some of the leading causes of death in the United States, vitamin C is a good choice for nearly everyone.

When starting your vitamin C regimen, start with lower doses (under 5 grams), and then work up to whatever level feels right to you. Liposomal vitamin C (that is, vitamin C that has been combined with lecithin or another fat to make it more bio-available) is by far the most absorbable form; we recommend this formula.

Once you figure out a routine that works for you and stick to it for a while, you’ll be amazed by the benefits that vitamin C can provide. You’ll have more energy, get sick far less often, and maybe even lose some weight in the process.

Vitamin C just might be a miracle cure that’s hidden in plain sight.

Surely, you’ve heard that this humble vitamin makes a great addition to any daily supplement regimen. You’re probably aware that it can help boost the immune system, and that it’s one of the most healthful components in many fruits.

But did you know that it’s been successfully used to cure over 30 major diseases—including “incurable” viruses like Herpes simplex, cancer, leukemia, and even brain disorders like schizophrenia (not to mention common colds and flus)?[1]

For one reason or another, vitamin C has a history of being ignored. Even though fresh fruit was known to prevent and cure scurvy since 1753, this simple cure was ignored by governments for over a century. So how did he do it? He administered vitamin C in extremely high dosesup to 300,000 milligrams per day (and usually between 350-700 milligrams per kilograms of body weight per day).

It turns out that high-doses of vitamin C are required to unlock its disease-curing abilities. Anything under a gram per day will only prevent scurvy and offer mild antioxidant benefits. The fact that the accepted RDA (recommended daily allowance) for vitamin C is 60 milligrams per day is more proof that medical regulatory agencies are nearly always behind the curve. Despite the resurgence of enthusiasm in high-dose vitamin C therapy, the proposed new RDA (which could take years to enact) is only 120 milligrams per day.[3]

Things start to get interesting over 5-10 grams. This is the point at which vitamin C begins to increase endogenous production of glutathione (the body’s “master antioxidant”) and boost immune function significantly. It begins to recalibrate and supercharge your body’s self-healing ability. Many health experts believe that 8-10 grams per day can prevent the common cold, and that 20-60 grams per day can stop a cold or flu in its tracks.[4]

If these amounts seem excessive, here’s a fun fact that should put things in perspective: studies have found that a typical 155-pound goat produces over 13,000 milligrams of vitamin C within its own body every day. Production increases massivelyup to over 200,000 milligrams per daywhen the goat is placed under stressful health conditions.[5]

Humans used to be able to produce their own vitamin C too, but because of a gene mutation that occurred approximately 60 million years ago, now we have to settle for taking it orally or intravenously. Researchers believe that with high-dose vitamin C therapy, we can mimic the astounding resilience of vitamin C-producing animals.     

Some tips for getting started

Don’t be afraid to take large daily doses of vitamin C! Doing so will only lead to greater health, vitality, and disease resistance.

It’s worth noting, however, that people often find that high doses can cause loose stools and diarrhea. To avoid this side effect, simply start low (500-1,000 mg per day) and build up to an optimal level, being careful to monitor its effects.

Once you reach 5-10 grams per day, split the total dosage into 2-4 doses, taken at equal intervals throughout the day. This ensures that your bloodstream receives a constant flow of vitamin C. Keep in mind that you will always have to take more once you’re sick, so try to keep a daily dosing regimen in order to prevent illness in the first place.

Note that sugar interferes with uptake of vitamin C, so you should avoid it when using vitamin C to treat illness (sugar wreaks havoc on the body and is best avoided anyway).

Lastly, you’ve probably noticed that both synthetic and plant-sourced vitamin C are available. Studies have failed to show any greater effectiveness or bioavailability of plant-derived ascorbic acid,[6] but it’s worth remembering that plant extracts have all sorts of phytonutrients and unstudied compounds that could very well make them superior to synthetic vitamins. Plant-derived vitamin C is much more expensive, so weigh the pros and cons and decide what feels right for you.
