DIY cleaning products



The amount of highly toxic chemicals with which our society is saturated is almost inconceivable.

It’s hard to understand why we would actively choose to pump our environment full of health-destroying poisons. And ignorance can no longer be blamed—the writing is on the wall.

But, since this is the kind of world in which we live, our only choice is to educate ourselves, to leverage this knowledge so that we can live healthy lives, and to spread the word—so that we can begin to change the way things are done.

The following list outlines seven of the most noxious and ubiquitous endocrine disruptors in industrial society, as well as ways to avoid them.

As you’ll see, hormone issues are just the tip of the iceberg. In fact, these chemicals are linked in some way to nearly every major health problem our society faces—so you would do well to heed the suggestions that are provided.

Glycol ethers are present in many paints, cleaning products, brake fluid and other car parts, and even cosmetics. Studies have linked them in a wide array of health issues, including infertility, birth defects, various cancers, blood abnormalities, lowered sperm count, asthma, and allergies.

Always do your homework and read labels before purchasing cleaning products and cosmetics. Some “green products” actually still contain toxic substances, despite their convincing labels.

To play it safe, learn to make your own non-toxic cleaning products. It’s way easier than you think!

Organophosphate pesticides are some of the most common pesticides in use today. Many studies have demonstrated that they adversely affect brain function, fertility, testerone levels, and thyroid function. This should come as no big surprise, given that they were originally developed for use by the Nazis as neurotoxic chemical warfare agents.

That’s right: we use chemical warfare agents on our conventional crops. Don’t believe the claims that these chemicals affect the nervous systems of insects but not those of humans.

Instead, just be sure to buy organic, non-GMO produce, or grow your own if possible!

Atrazine is another widely used chemical in industrial agriculture (it’s used as an herbicide on corn crops). Its effects on hormones are so detrimental that it can turn male frogs into egg-producing females! And here’s the worst part: it’s a pervasive drinking water contaminant, and therefore quite difficult to avoid (unless you take the proper precautions).

First and foremost, get yourself a high-quality water filter that certifiably removes atrazine. And don’t think you’re safe with bottled water: some brands contain atrazine and other pollutants.

Steer clear of conventional corn (even some organic corn is treated with herbicide, so be careful). Remember that even organic corn can contain mycotoxins, so make sure you know your source (or just limit your consumption of corn).

Dioxin is a poisonous industrial byproduct that’s gotten a lot more press, so you may have heard of it. There’s plenty of propaganda out there that’s designed to downplay its toxicity, though, so you may not be as familiar with its negative effects: decreased sperm count and sperm quality, infertility, severe immune suppression (with the potential for auto-immune disease), and cancer.

Dioxin sticks around and accumulates in the body for a very long time, so it’s best to avoid it to begin with. While it’s very difficult to remove completely from your life, eating fewer animal products will help considerably (because meat, fish, eggs, and butter are most likely to be contaminated).

And because you may already have an accumulation of dioxin in your body, consider practicing a detoxification regimen on a regular basis.

Flame retardants contain nasty chemicals called polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE’s), which adversely affect hormonal and cognitive function. And they seem to have contaminated pretty much the entire planet—one study even found significant levels of the chemical in women’s breast milk.

The use of some PBDE’s has been discontinued, but they’ll continue to persist in the environment for decades (and thus continue to contaminate animals and people). Furthermore, equally toxic flame retardants are still used in couches, bedding, mattresses, draperies, carpets, and other seemingly harmless household items and furniture.

Consider replacing your toxic furniture, and at the very least, install a HEPA air filter in your house.  

Phthalates cause adverse hormonal changes, lower sperm count, less mobile sperm, birth defects, and premature cell death (especially in testicular cells). And if that’s not bad enough, they’ve also been linked to diabetes, obesity, and thyroid dysfunction.

Here’s the first rule of thumb when it comes to avoiding pthalates: try to stay away from plastic. Food containers, children’s toys, and plastic wrap with a #3 recycling label are all offenders.   

Many plastic products claim to be safe, but remember that it’s always a good idea to avoid plastics whenever possible. Even if something is labeled as “BPA-free” or “phthalate-free,” it still could contain all sorts of nasty chemicals that manufacturers are not yet required to tell you about (or that we haven’t yet learned are dangerous). Better safe than sorry!

Some shampoos, conditioners, and other personal care products also contain pthalates (adding them to products that contact the skin seems to be the height of stupidity, but go figure). Avoid any products that list them as an ingredient, and any products that list “fragrance” as an ingredient, as they’re usually just trying to hide pthalate content.

Perchlorate is a rocket fuel additive that also just happens to be in most of our milk and produce, according to collected data from the Environmental Working Group.

In case you still need to be convinced of its toxicity after hearing that it’s a component of rocket fuel, here it goes: perchlorate disallows proper absorption of iodine by competing with it. Iodine defeciency leads to thyroid dysfunction, which is linked to staggering number of diseases and health conditions.

Because many people are already defecient in iodine, the presence of this toxin in our environment makes it even more important to supplement with iodine (sea kelp is one of the best sources).

Using a high-quality water filter will help remove perchlorate, so that your body can more easily assimilate the iodine with which you provide it.

Glutathione is critical for detoxification in the liver (you know, the thing that actually helps you detoxify, unlike weird footpads and lemon juice cleanses). In the liver, glutathione binds to toxins before they’re excreted, which is an important step in getting them out of your body.

In fact, the detox power of glutathione is so powerful that it’s used for people who overdose on Tylenol (acetaminophen) and have to go to the hospital to detox. In that case, the person gets an IV with another amino acid that helps their body make glutathione, called N-acetyl cysteine (NAC). The NAC increases their body’s production of glutathione, which helps their liver get rid of the acetaminophen.

Glutathione is also be very important for helping your body get rid of toxins in your food and environment. For example, one study found that in people who eat a lot of fish, the total amount of mercury the people retained in their bodies was related to genes regulating glutathione synthesis. The more glutathione people made, the less mercury they retained.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to live in a world free of manmade toxins? A world in which clean water, pure air, and optimal health is more important than profit margins and short-term schemes?

A world in which everyone holds themselves to the same high standard of accountability? A world in which you can trust that you’re not constantly surrounded by hidden sources of toxins?  

I’d like to think we’re on our way there. Unfortunately, though, that’s just not the way things are at present.

Staying healthy is a full-time job these days—mostly because we always have to be on the lookout for unwitting toxin sources.

Personal care, diet, and fitness obviously play an essential role, but even if you’re playing all your cards right, your health can still suffer considerably because of environmental toxins.

Below, you’ll find a list of unexpected toxin sources to avoid at all costs.

Don’t be overwhelmed; just take action, one step at a time. Start by removing just one toxin source from your life, and build up from there. This process should be empowering, not paranoia-inducing.

Let’s start with the basics…

Processed foods. It’s hard to take three steps in a grocery store without bumping into processed foods. Any product that is even a single step removed from its natural form should be considered processed.

Processed foods are designed to be overstimulating and addictive.[1] Creating such “designer junk foods” destroys nearly all the nutrients its ingredients may have contained. Synthetic vitamins and nutrients are sometimes added after the fact, but these are a poor replacement at best, and toxic at worst.

And to top things off, processed foods are filled with destructive substances like high-fructose corn syrup,[2] preservatives, colorants, artificial flavors, and texturants.

Many chemicals like this that have been deemed “safe” by the FDA in the past were later found to have deleterious effects on the body. The FDA will only ever investigate chemicals that they believe pose a serious danger—so just know that you’re rolling the dice by consuming any of them.

Non-organic produce. Organic products have been all the rage for years now, but because of the high price that they command, it can be tempting to justify the purchase of more affordable, non-organic food.

How bad could it possibly be?

Pretty bad, unfortunately.

Evidence is mounting that the pesticides and other various chemicals that are sprayed on conventional produce are adversely toxic. A widely published study claiming that there is little difference in the healthfulness and safety of organic and non-organic produce is now being harshly criticized and overturned.[3]

And don’t think that you can just wash off these noxious chemicals either—many of them are absorbed by the plant’s internal structures. In the case of GMO foods, toxicity is incorporated into the plant at a genetic level.

Unwashed produce. Even some organic produce is contaminated with pesticides and other toxic chemicals, so be sure to wash everything before eating it.

The most effective method is to submerge your produce completely in room temperature water, and then lightly scrub each item.

Avoiding dietary toxins

This probably isn’t anything you haven’t heard before.

If you’re already avoiding non-organic and processed food, excellent. Here’s some dietary toxin sources with which you may be less familiar, though…

Mycotoxins in wheat and corn. Here’s a shocking statistic of which very few people are aware: a large percentage of the grains available in the U.S. has been exposed to toxic mold (because it’s nearly always stored in commercial silos for long periods of time).[4]

When wheat and corn is exposed to mold, dangerous byproducts called mycotoxins are developed. Even though cooking will normally destroy any mold that’s present, the mycotoxins will remain intact.

Mycotoxins sap your energy, suppress the immune system, interfere with nutrient absorption, and disrupt metabolic and hormonal functioning in the body.[5]

While reducing (or even eliminating) your consumption of wheat and corn can be a difficult task, it’s really the only surefire way to protect yourself from mycotoxins.

And in case you still need some convincing, there’s a whole host of other reasons why you should banish wheat from your diet.

Damaged fats. Fats have gotten a bad rap in the past. Recent dietary fads (like the Paleo Diet) are starting to get the right idea, though—that the right kind of fat is incredibly healthful.

While whole books could be (and have been) written on this subject, here’s the basic gist that you should keep in mind: a fat becomes toxic when it is unstable, and thus becomes damaged and oxidized by the heat of cooking. The fats that are prone to this damage are called unsaturated.

The unsaturated fats that you’ll want to avoid (usually in the form of cooking oils) are as follows: corn oil (which can also contain mycotoxins, as explained above), canola oil, sesame oil, and anything else generically labeled as “vegetable oil.”

Stick with oils that contain lots of saturated fat, like coconut oil, palm oil, butter, and ghee.

Avoiding household toxins

And then there’s the myriad of toxin sources that surround us within our own homes. Here’s some of the biggest offenders, as well as some suggestions for how to neutralize them…

Plasticware. By now, you’re probably aware of the pitfalls of plastic.Even plastic products that are marketed as “non-toxic” are a gamble. Plastic contains many other chemicals besides those that are now considered toxic. Just because a company labels a given chemical as “non-toxic,” it doesn’t mean that future research won’t reveal the contrary.

So play it safe, and use as few plastic products as possible.

If you can’t eliminate plastic entirely, at least minimize your risk by not heating or freezing any plasticware (which accelerates the process of chemical leaching).

Never put plasticware in the dishwasher. Doing so will leach all those nasty chemicals and then redeposit them on all your other dishes!  

Furniture. A staggering percentage of mattresses, couches, and pillows contain flame retardants that have been shown to cause cancer and birth defects.[6]

High levels of these ridiculously toxic chemicals have been detected in people’s blood, which confirms that they easily enter the body when our skin is in contact with these household items, and even when we breathe the dust in our houses.

The process of “detoxifying” your house by replacing all your toxic furniture is certainly a daunting (and expensive) one. Just be aware of these dangers, and take one step at a time to clear your living space.

Start small: at least replace your pillows, then tackle the larger, more expensive pieces of furniture when it’s possible to do so. Isn’t your health worth the time and the cost?

Cleaning supplies. Taking one whiff of most cleaning supplies on the market is enough to confirm that they’re full of toxins. After years of coating our counters and tables, washing our clothes, and “freshening” the air in our house, these toxins accumulate to very dangerous levels.

And don’t believe everything you hear about “green cleaning products” either. Some of the top eco-products on the market still contain chemicals with demonstrable adverse effects.[7]  

Even seemingly inoffensive dryer sheets are bad news. Nearly all of them contain a whole host of terrible chemicals that cause burning skin, respiratory irritation, anxiety attacks, and irritability—like formaldehyde and chloroform, just to name a few that you’ve probably heard of.[8]

So always do your homework before purchasing any cleaning product. Better yet, read this article to learn how to make your own (it’s easy, I promise).

Creating your own sanctuary

Avoiding these toxin sources will have a huge effect on your health.

We may live in a toxin-laden world, but we shouldn’t just sit back and let ourselves be bombarded. Awareness is always the first step. Let the information that’s been presented sink in, and then start to take measures to protect yourself, bit by bit.

I don’t know about you, but personally, I find horror stories and thrillers about disease epidemics to be some of the most terrifying of all. The only book I’ve ever abandoned halfway through because of excessive fright was one by Richard Preston, who specializes in chilling tales surrounding infectious disease and bioterrorism.

Perhaps these stories are so frightening because there’s just too close to reality. Monsters, supernatural forces, and super-villains are easy to rationalize away as unrealistic, but diseases and mutating superbugs…well, all you need to do is read newspaper headlines to know that they’re the stuff of reality.

Though we humans have always had to deal with the infectious bugs with which we share this planet, the battle is beginning to escalate precipitously because of one monumental, manmade problem: antibiotic resistance.

Many bacteria that used to be minor concerns are mutating into worryingly resilient superbugs capable of causing life-threatening illnesses—even in those with perfectly healthy immune systems.

And this time, we won’t have any miracle drugs to save us, because these bugs are all learning how to outsmart even our most powerful and sophisticated antibiotics.

Our society-wide preoccupation with the allopathic elimination of illness has backfired, triggering astounding adaptations across the entire spectrum of bacteria. In the words of bacterial researcher Stuart Levy, “it has stimulated evolutionary changes that are unparalleled in recorded biological history.”[1]

All of the world’s bacterial researchers admit that we could face a post-antibiotic world within our lifetime, and pharmaceutical companies have already nearly ceased their design and production of new antibiotics. And when profit-hungry Big Pharma throws in the towel, you know we’re in trouble.

Even the World Health Organization claims that “a post-antibiotic era—in which common infections and minor injuries can kill—far from being an apocalyptic fantasy, is instead a very real possibility for the 21st Century.”[2]

And if you think protecting yourself is as easy as saying no thank you to antibiotics next time you have a cold, think again.

Antibiotics are everywhere: in household products like antibacterial soaps and cleaning solutions, in our water supply, and in our food. The meat industry feeds so many antibiotics to its animals that superbugs bred in stockyards have now become airborne and are making their way into surrounding urban areas.

And even if you abstain from taking antibiotics for medical purposes, what about all of them that are being taken by other people or used for industrial purposes? All of these non-biodegradable drugs are excreted and dumped into our surrounding environment—millions of tons each and every year—where they continue to accelerate the mutation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.[3]

How can we possibly cope?

Luckily, there is hope—it just doesn’t lie in the realm of miracle drugs. It is naïve to assume that an approaching medical breakthrough will save us; waiting for this unlikely intervention will only leave us more vulnerable.

It’s up to each one of us to take responsibility for our own health, and to understand exactly what actions are necessary to protect ourselves. Here’s where to start…

Don’t take antibiotics unless it’s absolutely necessary. Antibiotics are still incredibly important in extreme cases, such as invasive surgeries and severe illness in children and the elderly. In all other situations, though, their use should be extremely limited. Next time you contract a cold, give your immune system a chance to fight it by itself before rushing to the doctor for antibiotics. And never use antibiotics to treat the flu or other viral infections—they’re useless against viruses, and all you’re doing is destroying your microbiome and letting antibiotic-resistant bacteria run amok.

Use natural alternatives to antibiotics. Mother Nature has plenty of tricks up her sleeve when it comes to curing illness. Natural antibiotics and treatments like oregano, black cumin seed oil, vitamin C, vitamin D, grapefruit seed extract, and garlic target infection in a balanced, holistic way. At the end of this article, I’ll mention a resource that will teach you exactly which remedies to use for which illness.

Avoid antibacterial household products. Let’s face it: we’ve become germophobes. But despite assurances that wiping every surface and constantly washing our hands with antimicrobial substances, studies have shown that these practices don’t actually prevent further illness. And worst of all, they drastically accelerate the spread of drug-resistant bacteria.

Be wary of food and water contaminants. Never assume that your food and water is safe from antibiotic contamination. Drink purified water from a filter that specifically advertises its ability to filter antibiotics, and steer clear of conventional meat and GM foods (both of which either contain antibiotics or cause antibiotic resistance within the human body).  

Most importantly, continue to educate yourself about antibiotic resistance and what you can do about it.

Knowledge is power
