We’ve written at length about the brain benefits of turmeric, the miracle root that continues to surprise the medical community with its inexhaustible healing capacities.

Turmeric supports and protects the brain on every level. Research has revealed that compounds in turmeric boost cognitive function by minimizing neurological inflammation, protect against brain damage by blocking the activation of microglia cells, and even regenerate brain cells.[1]

Until not so long ago, scientists didn’t even believe that neurogenesis—that is, the regeneration of brain cells—was even possible. Now it’s clear that the feat can be accomplished with a simple household spice.

These mechanisms make turmeric a promising functional food for the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and general cognitive decline, as well as epilepsy and other convulsive cognitive disorders.

It should come as no surprise, then, that turmeric also offers profound protection against stroke, a condition that develops because of blood flow blockages in the brain.

How turmeric protects against stroke

In a recent article, we outlined how scientists are using turmeric as a template for developing the next generation of stroke medications. Clinical trials with a turmeric-derived compound known as CNB-001 demonstrate that it can regenerate damaged cells after a stroke has occurred.

Currently, stroke patients are given a tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), which rapidly dissolves the blood clot causing the stroke, but cannot repair any damage that’s already been done, and must be administered within an hour of the stroke’s onset. Medical researchers hope that medications like CNB-001 will offer relief and recovery to patients long after a stroke has occurred.

While this research is incredibly promising, you don’t need to turn to laboratory turmeric creations for stroke treatment, as it has quite a bit to offer even in its natural form.

For example, one study used an experimental stroke model in rats to examine whether turmeric can prevent stroke-induced brain damage. During ischemic stroke (the most common kind), a massive inflammatory response is triggered in the brain, and various immune cells migrate into brain tissue.

The presence of one type of white blood cell called a neutrophil is a marker for the severity of brain damage—the greater the neutrophil adhesion, the greater the damage and impairment of neurological response. In the study, researchers found that curcuminoids reduced neutrophil adhesion to the walls of blood vessels by 67%, and also that an inflammatory protein called TNF-alpha was greatly reduced.[2]

And that’s just one of many studies that’s leading medical experts to take a closer look at turmeric’s stroke-healing potential. Remember the blocked activation of microglia cells that was mentioned above?

Researchers have reason to believe that this mechanism not only boosts cognitive function and slows brain aging, but may also help regenerate brain cells following a stroke.[3] In fact, it was exactly this finding that led scientists to model CNB-001 after turmeric compounds.

Curcumin, one of the most commonly known compounds in turmeric, has also been shown to help with the treatment of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) stroke, which has a higher morality rate than ischemic stroke. One study found that the anti-inflammatory effects of curcumin reduced swelling in brain tissue and helped prevent loss of tissue (as well as the resulting neurological impairments).[4]

Another study found that 75-300 mig/kg of curcumin, administered up to six hours after ICH, helped lessen the damage caused by hematomas (blot clots outside of blood vessels).[5]

Turmeric also stops stroke before they happen

While it’s critically important to provide stroke patients with a path to optimal recovery, the greatest measure against stroke is still prevention—and turmeric has that base covered too.

Oxidative stress in the brain is both a risk factor for stroke, as well as a contributing factor to the damage caused during stroke. Curcumin and other antioxidant compounds in turmeric are well-known for their ability to scavenge free radicals and prevent oxidative stress, both during a stroke and in otherwise healthy individuals.

The same studies cited above even suggested that by attenuating oxidative stress and inhibiting inflammatory proteins in the brain, turmeric helps prevent atherosclerosis (arterial plaque buildup), a major risk factor for stroke.

Turmeric also reduces neurological inflammation on a day-to-day basis, and supercharges the brain’s detoxification system by boosting the production of endogenous antioxidant enzymes like glutathione, glutathione reductase, glutathione-S-transferase, and superoxide dismutase.[6]

But Curcumin is not Easy to Absorb

Curcumin is the active compound you want to absorb from the turmeric root. This is the most powerful medicine in the plant. However, a big problem with turmeric is that curcumin isn’t easily absorbed. [7]

Various animal and clinical studies reveal that the concentrations of curcumin in blood plasma, if detectable at all, are extremely low regardless of dosage size. [8]

It’s become abundantly clear by now that turmeric is one of the world’s most healing plants. The deeper researchers delve into the chemistry of this incredible root, the more benefits they seem to discover.

While turmeric contains a wealth of beneficial compounds, curcumin is usually the star of the show. Curcumin has been shown to be one of the most powerful, versatile anti-inflammatory compounds in existence—and that’s just the beginning.

Turmeric offers hope for stroke victims

The hybrid molecule CNB-001 is a gamechanger for stroke victims—research has demonstrated that it has the ability to repair stroke damage on a molecular level after a stroke has already occurred. This is a critical tool for emergency medicine physicians to have in their repertoire, because a large percentage of stroke victims simply aren’t able to seek out medication quickly enough to prevent damage from happening.

Researchers have taken note of turmeric’s brain-cell-regenerating qualities for some time, and have long hoped to be able to develop analog compounds like CNB-001 that can target specific types of brain damage.

Ancient Ayurvedic practitioners have used turmeric for thousands of years for its brain-balancing properties—and not long after the modern turmeric revival began, researchers confirmed that turmeric really is the brain’s best friend.

One prominent set of studies expored ar-tumerone, a lesser known turmeric alkaloid. What they found is truly remarkable: ar-tumerone can speed up the rate at which neural stem cells differentiate into functioning neurons by up to 80%. It even helps migrate neural stem cells to areas in the brain that are most in need of neurogenesis (brain cell regeneration).[2]

Subsequent studies demonstrated that ar-tumerone also helps defend the brain against further damage, and that the compound readily passes through the blood brain barrier (which thwarts the absorption of the vast majority of pharmaceuticals).[3]

Weight management is a full-time job in which nearly everyone seems to be engaged—you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who doesn’t think they “could lose a few pounds.”

While vanity and impossible standards certainly define the weight loss world to an extent, the drive to maintain a healthy weight should nevertheless be viewed as a positive instinct. After all, those who are obese (or even just overweight) are at much higher risk for type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, gallbladder disease, cancer, depression, anxiety, and other mental disorders, sleep apnea and breathing problems, osteoarthritis and bodily pain, high blood pressure, bad cholesterol, and all causes of death.[1]

Turning “bad” fats into “good” fats. Researchers have known for some time that our bodies contain two kinds of fat: brown fat, which expends excess energy through heat generation (and doesn’t cause weight gain), and white fat, which is the notorious kind that leads to obesity through fat storage. It turns out that curcumin actually turns white fat into brown fat by enhancing the expression of brown fat genes. Curcumin even causes apoptosis, or “programmed cell death,” in white fat cells, thus improving the ratio between brown fat and white fat. And the more brown fat you have, the more easily your body is able to burn more white fat through thermogenesis (which is induced by brown fat).

Western medical science has a tough time wrapping its head around emotional and mental imbalances. Because it rarely looks beyond physical causes, it misses the more subtle blockages that lead to problems like depression and anger. Even conventional psychology gets caught up in the belief that neurotransmitter imbalances cause these emotional disorders.

While neurochemistry is indirectly correlated with these states of emotional dysfunction, the whole story is quite a bit more complicated.

We tend to think of foods and beauty products as two entirely separate categories. They might both offer convenience and healing, but you wouldn’t want to eat your beauty products or rub food all over yourself, right?

Disease is often regarded as something complicated—it seems we secretly believe this is why everyone is so sick, and getting sicker.

It certainly is true that the full sophistication of the body and its afflictions are far beyond the reach of our current understanding (despite the arrogance of some scientists). The wide-ranging successes showcased in other turmeric studies have made the mainstream medical community much more willing to test it as a treatment for other inflammatory diseases. Many scientists now even admit that healing chronic inflammation with functional foods and lifestyle modification is a powerful approach to treating illness.[2]

One prominent study implemented curcumin (the primary anti-inflammatory compound in turmeric) as an “add-on” therapy for bronchial asthma. Participants who took 500 mg of curcumin twice daily (in addition to their conventional asthma medication) experienced a greater improvement of airway obstruction, and the add-on produced no side effects.[3]

While studies on asthma and turmeric have been going on since the 1990’s (when researchers discovered that turmeric clears phlegm buildup, alleviates coughing, and prevents asthmatic reactions),[4] studies have only recently returned to the concept that turmeric could be a replacement for (not just an add-on to) conventional asthma medications. The first study cited above did not report that curcumin had “clinical efficacy,” because it was framing curcumin as a sort of amplifier for the main treatment (corticosteroids) rather than a primary treatment itself.

But other recent studies have demonstrated the directly asthma-healing effects of turmeric, including its ability to decrease acute airway inflammation,[5] accumulation of inflammatory cells, smooth muscle thickening, epithelial lining abnormalities, mucus secretion, and other markers of chronic asthma.[6]

“Superfoods” have been the object of both admiration and criticism in recent years.

Some health experts claim that “superfood” is merely a label that allows product manufacturers to charge a significantly higher price. They argue that in many cases, superfoods aren’t actually any more healing or nutritionally rich than some of our more run-of-the-mill dietary choices—we’re just willing to be enchanted by (and pay the higher price for) a healing food that’s been shipped in from a far-flung locale.

At Natural Mentor, we like to look at Superfoods more closely… Some superfoods probably aren’t worth their exorbitant price (and they can probably be nutritionally replaced by a much cheaper, more readily available food)—but some superfoods really deserve their title, and we should be grateful that they’ve been made more accessible. Another good example of this is tomatoes and olive oil. Around 98% of the antioxidant flavonols in tomatoes is found in the tomato skin, along with great amounts of carotenoids like beta carotene and lycopene. So the first thing you need to do is keep the skin on your tomatoes. The next thing you need to do is to ensure you eat or cook them with a healthy oil such as olive oil.  That’s because carotenoids are fat soluble. That means your body absorbs more of in the presence of a little fat or oil. If you cook your tomatoes rather than eating them raw the lycopene content increases by 5-6 times.

In case you haven’t already noticed, turmeric offers an astounding array of health benefits that’s just short of miraculous. We’ve outlined in past articles how turmeric is revolutionizing the way we treat cancer, how it’s outcompeting hordes of pharmaceuticals, and how its restoring industry-wide trust in “natural remedies,” which were viewed with derision and skepticism throughout most of modern medicine’s history.

Science is now beginning to demonstrate that turmeric is also an incredible remedy for depression, a neurological imbalance that affects up to 20% of the world’s population at any given time[1] (and that’s a low number based only on the cases that are actually diagnosed).

If you’ve ever suffered from depression, you know just how debilitating the condition can be. Disrupted lifestyle schedules and relationships, lethargy, extreme fatigue, lack of motivation, and deep sadness are all common attributes of the disease. Studies have even shown that depression causes physical brain damage, wreaks havoc on many of the body’s vital systems, and increases the likelihood of other diseases and conditions.

Just like antidepressants, but better

We’ll start with an apples-to-apples comparison. Pharmaceutical antidepressants are designed to alter levels of brain neurotransmitters (usually serotonin and dopamine, and sometimes norepinephrine). The correlation between neurotransmitter imbalance and depression is not a misguided notion. However, the assumption that balance can be restored just by messing with isolated chemicals in the brain is woefully simplistic.

The brain is a vastly complex, little-understood system—and healing it requires equally dynamic approaches and tools.

Here’s where turmeric comes in. This incredible little root also works by balancing neurotransmitter levels—but it does so in a much more sophisticated way.
